Wasn't he the AD by then? I guess he could have fired himself.

No offense, but I'll take Matthew Mcconaughey over these "celebrities".

Oh, & I think they're still offering LSU fans some of their seats. So that's cool.

I think Saban is the best coach in the country. I doubt Bama wins a bunch of titles. There is too much good competition out there, unlike when The Bear was around. Like Rupp, Wooden and Bertman. Those days are over. I do think they win this year, but then they lose coaches, players read their own press, Tenn learns how to kick a field goal whatever. Saban is great though.

I agree with this. Too much parity for a Bear-like era. That said, he's an incredible coach & I'd do anything to get him back. And I hate that he's in T-town.

He has whatever it was that Bryant had that allows him to take ordinary players and turn them into champions.

This in a nutshell is the key and what makes Saban great.

Pat Dye (the greatest of all time), says in his book that the #1 thing above all else that made Bryant great was his ability to get a kid to give his all, to maximize every bit of talent that he had, and play to a higher level.

If I was at home, I could quote directly from the book, but it is really telling and Dye knew Bryant extremely well after coaching with him for 9 years at Bama.

Auburn. IMHO, Dye is one of the top 6 or 7 coaches in SEC history depending on where you place a couple of guys.

This is very underated.

Having been apart of high school programs for several years it's amazing the stuff you wish you could control that people that have no idea are in charge of.

I would also agree with the Aubie above referencing Pat Dye. Saban finds a way to get the most out of a player and uses as many resources possible to do it. It's amazing the amount of folk that have rolled thru that complex the past few years.

I'm not sure if that's possible today. In today's environment, Bryant would have been run off after 68-69-70.

I've often wondered about that. I think it's entirely possible and what does that say about "today's environment."

One last thing, Saban's record at Alabama is 32-8 or .800. Bryant's winning percentage at Bama was .802, but that was over 25 years. Saban's certainly making his own mark, but you have to give the ole man his due, Bryant wasn't bad.

Indeed, Coach Bryant had those lean years. He acknowledges this at the beginning of chapter 32 in his autobiography, BEAR, The Life and Good Times of Alabama's Coach Bryant.

About that subject, he wrote, "I said, 'There are two sets of alumni. A large set, to which I belong, and a small set, composed of Mary Harmon (His wife for those not familiar.) and me. That small set will decide when I get too old, too fat or too ignorant to coach. There won't be any need for the other set to mouth off about it.'"

When he returned to the Capstone as head coach in 1958, he was A.D., also. That was a requirement he made as condition for his hiring. After only 4 wins in the previous 3 years, there was no bargaining by Bama's powers that was.

USC lost 4 games this year. Man you are obsessed with Nick Saban. Do you spend time with your girl at all? I'll send you an autographed pic of saban that was given to me and i promise you there are no spots that need to be wiped off of the glass of the frame.

Pat Dye was also the AD at AU through much of the 80's.

I agree with most all of the sentiments in this thread. Saban is probably the best coach in CFB right now, and definitely in your top three no matter how you cut it.

However, football is such a complex multi-factorial enterprise. Saban controls everything he can, but he can't control everything. Bama could easily have lost some games this year. That said, every juggernaut is going to have some 2 and 3 loss seasons sprinkled in between its massive 14-0 runs.

I agree he's probably the best (out of maybe 3 or 4) right now. Our loss is Bama's gain (which is what I don't like about the situation). C'est La Vie.

BUT (and I'm not saying this as a flame) I still think its an open question how he does long-term. His longest stint has been 5 years. That never-ending grinding intensity may wear people down overtime to such a point where the well-spring dries up. It probably helps him that he has such high-turnover among his coaches. Its going to be interesting to see if he stays 5+ years at Bama what happens. I don't see him being there in 10 years. i think he heads for the lake before that. At least I hope he does if he stays at Bama.

I agree right now Saban is one of the best coaches in the country if not the best. I still think Urban Meyer is a very good coach. I also think Florida is a great place for players to play and it is a recruiting hot bed of talent. I think Bama and Florida will rotate in their dominance. Saban will have off games like everyone else. Utah, Auburn, UL Monroe, Tennessee games will tell you he will have some off games. He just does not have as many and his teams can still win even when they play bad. I just don't think Bama is going to win every National Title for the next 10 years. It seems that some Bama fans really believe this. The games still have to be played and upsets happen. Injuries happen as well. Many things can happen over a 10 year period.
