Parking? Auto Zone and Fed Ex Forum are only a couple of blocks from one another and would compete for parking. How close are the
They are further apart than that. The Prabody and the old Peabody Entertainment Center take up about 4 blocks of actual space. Then you still have 2 more blocks to Beale and the Forum is on the far side of that. If the NBA visitors use the Westin (which many do because of its location), then that leaves the other side of downtown available for baseball. That includes the Peabody, Madison, and the Hyatt, as well as several smaller hotels. Traffic wouldn't be terrible, either, as there are major outlets leading in and out in both locations.

Autozone Park is a great facility. And Memphis has better air service than bham. But the lack of tailgating and RV facilities is a bummer.
I think it has already been decided that the city would set up for RVs at a Tiger Lane and have constant shuttle service. With enough security, this would work. That area still isn't great, but it is improving thanks to the Croc Center, Central Ave and Cooper-Young. There would be room there.

Scared of urban areas. AutoZone is ridiculously fan and kid friendly. But they read lots of articles on their Facebook newsfeeds that tell them Memphis is a scary place where white people get robbed all the time.
This. A lot of it is based in racism, too. Might as well call it how it really is.
As for myself, I will definitely go. I've lived here for 34 years and have never been a victim of a crime of any kind. I don't just hang in the burbs, either. I work for a contracting firm, so I have worked in rough areas of town on plenty of occasions.
Also, the city is working hard to upgrade its image as some things have started to improve, especially in areas of downtown. You can bet they will put a lot of effort and money behind this being a success. I'm sure this would include tight security downtown.
And not just the city government. I guarantee you that FedEx will support this, as well. They are pushing to get Memphis into the Big XII and putting a lot of money behind it. They also have a vested interest in making sure an SEC Baseball Tourney would go off without any issues.

I am sure Birmingham/Hoover is a nice place but not much there. Difficult to fly into.
----
What exactly do you want that Birmingham doesn't offer? There are nice hotels within 3 miles of the park. There is any number of outdoor recreation activities. If you will quit being so cheap you can rent a car, or take a cab and find great nightlife and awesome restaurants within a 20 minute drive of the stadium. The stadium seats more than most minor league parks. Oh and there is a freaking awesome new minor league stadium in downtown Birmingham. You could take in that atmosphere if the team is in town.
Sorry you can't park your car and walk around drunk for the week with everything within 20 feet for your convience, but saying there isn't much in Hoover/ Birmingham is just ignorant.
These two posts sum up the debate. Do you travel by flying and expect to enjoy a dense downtown or do you typically drive everywhere? I'd personally prefer a destination city that is walkable. But it's clear that's not a universal preference.

Holy frick.
New Orleans: As of the April 1, 2012, estimate, the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) had a population of 1,227,096.
Birmingham: The population of this metropolitan statistical area as of the 2010 census was 1,130,047.
If you can't find something to do in Birmingham, there's no where they could move the tourney to make you happy. You're a social leper.
Not sure that this comparison works...New Orleans and Birmingham are never mentioned in the same breath when it comes to finding things to do...
This post highlights another key theme in this thread: people in Alabama see Birmingham as the "big city" with plenty of amenities. Anyone outside of Alabama recognizes there are far better places to host sporting events and visit. And I say this as someone who grew up in Alabama...

frick sugarland! I hate that place more and more every time I go there. I work for a company based there.

If they care about attendance and central location, they should centrally locate it to the fanbases that give a shite: LSU, state, aTm, piss, arkansas.
No one else cares.
And this, in a nutshell, is why it should be at least moved. Obviously, a rotation would be an ideal situation, but that's not on the table.
Memphis would be ideal for the fan bases that make up at least 75% of the attendees. If not more.

he was only kidding but sugarland really does suck these days. 15-20 years ago was a really nice suburb.

I walked in a subway and there were maybe 16 people there. 4 spoke English. The three behind the counter and me.

Not my cup of tea. Glad Texas harbors more of that than us. Personal preference and all.

It's not uncommon to want to hear English. If that astonishes you then kool.

Seems like a pretty easy solution. Stay somewhere nice near the entertainment districts. Go to the park for a few hours, then go back and hit up the bars.

Either move to Memphis or NOLA or rotate it and rural Alabama will get their turn every 4 or 5 years.
Really think that rotating would be the most fair solution. Already have football and basketball championship in the SEC East footprint. Overdue to throw a bone to some teams on the west end of the footprint.

I'm all for rotating every event. The SEC has some great sports destinations within it's boarders.

Don't move it...
Otherwise, what would people have to complain about like children?

I think it should be moved, but not anywhere near Texas.
No attractive legitimate location.
Put it in Memphis or Nashville.
Or Nola if the city ever builds a good French Quarter/Uptown stadium.
