I would guess that there is some latent issue with hiring an Arky State coach too
If you ever work there you will never be a HC at the University of Arkansas. To NWA that place does not exist.

Some have utter disdain for him and believe him constantly running the score up at SHS and Shiloh represents a lack of character. His ties to Ronnie Floyd also do not help. Some in the community see Floyd as a snake oil salesman. I have no ill feelings toward Ronnie Floyd, but some see his ministry as Swaggart-esque.
That may be as simple as I can put it without going into details and taking up a War and Peace size post.

Quite obviously, because you had a bad season, and you want to make it look like you (Arky, collectively) knows something we don't. You're playing the "long game." The idea is that BB will pay off eventually. That concept is reinforced by saying you turned down a championship-caliber coach, who was begging to come there, but you're above short-term, gimmicky success in favor of something far more grand.
Dude, I just said us hiring Bielema when we could have hired Gus makes us look way worse. Did you even read the post? I'm not spinning anything, I'm saying Arkansas looks really stupid right now.

Will do, Chuck is a cool guy. I worked with him on the Bobby Petrino show and he was the only bright spot of that production. Bobby was an a-hole and didn't respect the equipment.

It is not that Long, has a fear of hiring anything from Arkansas. I would imagine before the Auburn vs. Arkansas game Long comes to Bielema and says that you know that Gus is from Arkansas and some boosters and POTB wanted me to hire him. He wanted your job BB and do you realize how important this game is. I doubt very seriously BB knew about Gus and or him even coaching at Arkansas or anything else that went down. BB does not strike me as the most cerebral coach that has ever walked the sidelines.
As a matter of fact, his manila folder with red sharpie boxes and picture pages is not understood by anyone with any knowledge of football except for him.

I read your post and understand what you're now telling me. It isn't for a lack of comprehension, I simply don't believe you.

God that show was terrible aside from the segment where Petrino broke down offensive plays.
I have heard from multiple people that Petrino was grade-A piece of shyt.

Like I said Arky fans won't admit it.
Quite honestly, I would have been happy as a lark with either coach. I think Gus is a fantastic offensive mind, (we now know) a pretty good in-game coach, and a heck of a recruiter. Bielema brought a fantastic track record from Wisconsin and played the type of football we yearned to get back to.
If it was between the two, it was win-win at that point in time.
When I say that Bielema inherited an absolute dumpster fire of a program and roster, that's not a fanatic defense of him or a slight at Malzahn. Gus wins 5 games at most with this squad, and that's without Collins, Skipper or Kirkland.
For the most part, Hog fans understand this year as they did with Petrino in 2008 that this is a ground-up rebuild that requires patience. That doesn't excuse a 9 game losing streak, but no one with half a brain went into the season thinking we were somehow winning 7 or more games.

You don't believe that Arkansas could have hired Gus?
Seriously man?

Well isn't Arkansas his dream job?

Fact is.
Malzahn would've had a very shitty year at Arkansas if we had hired him.
Ellis Johnson left Arkansas after 2 weeks when Bobby Petrino hired him. Part of it was Spurrier doubled his Salary that we couldn't match at the time, the other part is I think he quickly understood what working for Petrino would be like and he'd be working with a bad hand seeing the recruiting plan and what not.
I don't think Johnson would've came with Gus, he wouldn't have gotten Garner from UGA or Craig from FSU. Auburn's D has been pretty bad, I couldn't imagine how bad it'd be with Arkansas' current defensive players.
On the Offensive side of the ball, Arkansas' roster isn't built for Gus' offense. Now the 3 WR that Bielema ran off would still be here, and Brandon Mitchell would likely have blossomed in an option system. I screamed and screamed for Paul Petrino to run triple option with BMitch and kill clock against ULM.
Gus would've figured out some advantages and schemed to a couple wins. He'd have maybe gotten 6 wins, but would've been killed at LSU and Alabama in a bad bad way.
All of the bright spots from Arkansas' freshman class wouldn't be at Arkansas save for maybe Hunter Henry. Maybe they could have gotten Nick Marshall at Arkansas but I doubt it, and Ty Storey our incoming 2015 stud isn't built for the HUNH, he's a big gunslinger. There's only one big bodied WR in the Arkansas HS Jr/Sr class as well.
Auburn had top 5 recruiting classes bought and paid for specifically for the HUNH, it should surprise no one that Auburn is where they are.

This season was way different than Petrino's first year in that there was players who had been part of a successful season as major contributors. Put Petrino in this years mess, the results are the same, I believe. You put Malzahn in this mess its worse because he didnt have a QB to run his offense like he did at AU. They werent getting a JUCO kid in here to play QB.

Not anymore. Maybe when he just started getting into the college game. He was quoted saying that like in 2006.

He actually said that? I thought it was something that Arkansas fans just made up.

Gus would've been a good hire
Just not a great fit for Arkansas right now
Arkansas just might be Mizzou or Auburn next year
Auburn was the right job for Gus, and vise verses
Gus is a solid coach, he'll do well ..

Agreed on all points.
Bert looks to be a good hire for us because he plays the brand of football we need to get back to. Gus was a good hire for Auburn because of the litany of reasons already discussed.
You can have it both ways.

quote:Not really. It isn't lights out, but it is vastly improved over last year and is a play making D (not a shutdown D).
Auburn's D has been pretty bad
As for the point of the thread, Gus would have done well at Arky, but it is too soon to write Bert off. He needs a couple of more years.
Also, it is too soon to make a final call on Gus. It all looks like roses right now, but I'll wait on building the statue for another year or two.

No, not at Arkansas. He was a great hire at Auburn. But at Arkansas he would have been toxic and a terrible hire. The Stephens Media Witchhunt days would have been back in a heartbeat.

What's the story on Malzahn with the Pigs? Quite a few don't seem to care for him. Were there problems with Mustain's recruitment to Arkansas that rubbed folks the wrong way? Did he stab anyone in the back when he was OC at Arkansas?
