Saban and Emmert had built LSU up to the point where it recruited itself: the budget, facilities, commitment, etc. were all there and LSU was a national brand. This had never been the case before. Hell, Miles must have made more than any coach other than Saban over his career. For that I expect to be real competition for the SEC every year. Instead we got consistently playing down to the level of competition and needing wild comebacks to hopefully win, rarely even a close second to Bama (who was still suffering from probation in Miles' first few seasons)

That doesn't guarantee anything.

bullshite. Not even close. We were crashing the party back then... that's part of the reason why LSU remains the one BCS champ whose title was disputed by national media. THEY wanted USC.

It wasn't just the 2003 title that put us on the map, it was that PLUS finishing top 5 with another title in 2005-2006-2007.

Prior to that, we were basically on Auburn level- win the SEC West every other year, we got a 1-loss natty and they (Auburn) got an undefeated season.

You're saying Miles underachieved; and yet we're talking about a stretch where the SEC champ won the BCS 7 years in a row. It's not like we lost the conference to some average team the years we didn't win it.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, but ask Jimbo and FSU about how a willingness to spend impacts a job's attractiveness. LSU AD was run by corrupt idiots who weren't willing to go that extra mile before 2000. LSU was a top flight job in 2005, something that I don't think could've been said since the 1960s.

That's true, but we should've broken through more than one time after 2007; we weren't even close competition most years:
- 2012 we had Bama on the ropes and could've gone to Atlanta and Piles blew it with a fake FG when Bama was playing safe, kicking a 54-yarder (by far a career long) to give them good field position for a quick score and playing for the FG at the end.
-2013 we came out flat and a miracle comeback failed against a mediocre U of Mississippi team that was missing like half it's defense. Typical Miles stuff: being unprepared, undisciplined and playing to the level of competition.
After that we were never even close. The buffoon got his teeth kicked in by Bert Bielema by a combined score of 48-14 in his 10th and 11th seasons at LSU. Just a joke of a "coaching" job and he should've been fired long beforehand. If he had any shame now, he'd repay LSU some of those millions

You really are just a baby back bitch.

We didn’t win 5 national championships. Waaaaaaaa. We didn’t go undefeated every year. Waaaaaaaaa. We didn’t win the SEC every year. Waaaaaaa. Dumb frick. Tell me how many programs wouldn’t trade their success for ours over his tenure. I’d venture to say that out of 127 D1 programs, at least 120 of them would take our win loss record, success, and players under Miles. Because there were very few programs who accomplished more.

Yep we should settle for Les, compare ourselves to UNLV and be happy with that. If you are cool with paying top dollar for the honor of being Bert Bielema and Arkansas' bitch , then Less is your man. Here's to many more 3-9 seasons for your boy Elmer Fudd in Topeka

Coach O is 1 out 4 in attempts at stoping Nick Saban

I don’t see what’s changed

Well, O did rebuild us in the trenches where we were depleted, he brought LSU's offense out of the stone age, and we're getting commitments from highly sought QBs whose talents won't be wasted.

I'm not one to beat up on Miles, but Orgeron has fixed the glaring weaknesses Miles' teams became known for.

That's a pretty big change.

Yea I gotta agree here. The OP is pretty much degrading a HC that held up an NC and multiple SEC trophies then brought them home to Red Stick. And y’all call Bama fans entitled. I can sympathize with LSU fans that were frustrated how LSU ran the ball whilst Bama was in an 8 man front under Miles though. Let it go OP, imho Bama will never win eight in a row against LSU again and we’d be lucky to pull off two in a row from here on out. Who you need to really be mad at is Auburn for winning that 2006 Iron Bowl. If Bama wins that game, Saban never puts on a Crimson shirt.

You have a pretty short memory. LSU began setting all kinds of offensive records ( including against Mizzou) once the load of dead weight that was Clue-Les was removed. It took a while to get the pieces in place with regards to the coaching staff and recruiting to compete with Bama, but it was a completely different team from the emotionally soft, undisciplined mess that Piles put out which routinely struggled with or lost to the likes of Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas.

In conclusion, Saban would've been great at Bama regardless, but he benefitted tremendously from the one annual opponent that could match their talent being coached by an aloof buffoon who was trying to fit running QBs into a 1970s Big Ten offense.

You mean the coach that won a national title, 2 sec championships, and multiple 10+ win seasons? The coach that, when Saban was hired at Bama, a lot of LSU fans claimed was better than Saban? That coach?

Let's not forget how many LSU fans(and other fans too) claim Saban only wins because he has more talent on his roster and that he is a mediocre X's and O's coach. So if LSU could match Bama in talent on their roster, how did we benefit from that?

Les's 2011 team caught a bad break on a November Friday night game when huge underdog Iowa State Cyclones upset the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
It was pretty much lined up for an LSU vs Oklahoma State national championship game.
We all know LSU would have whipped them up front, running it down their throat for what would have been Les's 2nd National championship in 4 years changing Miles legacy at LSU.
