Bama will be the favorite indefinitely, until Saban shows a marked decline or retires, neither of which is happening anytime soon. LSU and TAMU are the only programs recruiting well enough to have any chance to challenge them for the division. Fisher’s history makes TAMU a more attractive bet, although Orgeron has exceeded expectations so far. TAMU also made impressive gains in year 1 under Fisher in finally becoming a more physical team, which Sumlin never could do.

Auburn isn’t recruiting quite as well as LSU and TAMU, but Gus has been able to beat Bama in the past. Their problem is they haven't been good enough vs. LSU and UGA. If Gus can’t survive the 2019 schedule, they could slip pretty far behind the top 3 during the transition to a new regime.

Arkansas, MSU, and Ole Miss all had top 25 recruiting classes in 2019, so the bottom doesn’t appear to be falling out anywhere in the division (yet). I would have the most faith in Chad Morris out of this group to make some noise in the medium-term.

Your thoughts?

LSU will never challenge for anything with Ed Orgeron running the show, and deep down every LSU fan knows this.

You make good points.
But, honestly it's only 8 games. Eight.
A few bounces here or there can take someone from 5-3 middle of the pack to 7-1 division winner.

That’s the thing though. We had that deep down feeling when he was named permanent HC in November 2016. Yet, here we are in 2019 and he’s coming off a 10-win season, top-10 finish, and back to back top-5 recruiting classes. He corrected some of the boneheaded things we used to do under Miles which has been very welcomed. I think LSU fans who pay close attention are mildly surprised and want to see what 2019 brings. We should be fairly loaded.

True. A few injuries, bad breaks, and maybe a tough East draw can really flip a season.

He hasn’t won a single game in his tenure at LSU that Miles wouldn’t have been expected to win.

LSU still cannot recruit Offensive lineman worth a shite.

The only thing that has changed are the expectations you all have of your program.

What do you think the reaction would’ve been like if Les had a season where he lost to Florida, A&M, and got shut out 29-0 by Alabama?

Where is aggy telling us about that monster Jimbo is building?

I do know if you aren't LSU, Bama or Auburn you probably won't be winning any SEC West Championships.

Miles was slipping more than people remember those last few years. He went 5-3, 4-4, 5-3, 1-1 in the SEC before being let go. Maybe he would’ve been expected to beat Georgia, Auburn, and UCF last year but I’m not positive he’d have actually done it.

His last game, the loss @ Auburn, we dropped out of the rankings the following Monday when Orgeron was named interim HC. We are now preseason #7. At some point you have to give a little credit to Orgeron for that rise.

Having said that, a little skepticism is warranted until he wins a championship of some sort.

Orgeron is obviously a completely different coach than he was at OM, and I think he could end up doing well for himself. But his best year is 10–3, and for all of Miles' "slipping," he never would have lost to Troy. This year will be telling, I think. Miles was still a good coach. If O doesn't win 11 this year, he's probably not going to be capable of doing anything that Les Miles couldn't have done for you. I think the administration will see this sooner rather than later.

Orgeron and Miles are both terribly fun coaches, though. Their pressers are amazing.

Orgeron gets the benefit of good talent at LSU. Hes a motivator, not a national championship coach.

LSU has a pretty nice schedule this year too. Not too weak, not that difficult.

Hes kinda the guy that has lucked out his entire career to be where he is.

Miles needed replaced, but firing him and then putting Ed O in charge is truly insulting for what Les did. He should have a Statue, instead, hes coaching football at Kansas because he loves the game.

No knocks personally on Ed, if that's how it seems. Stand up guy, but he really is lucky and fallen into good situations that he shouldn't be in.

That’s cool and all to have this opinion. However, his recruiting has not slowed down in the least and he just finished the season ranked #6. So if all the pieces fall into place I’d say he can definitely challenge for many things.

That's really not that difficult. If Ed O can finish #6, so could a monkey. Just imagine if LSU had a better coach.

I don't understand why some LSU fans think hes the greatest. I've always said yall could do way better.

Saban
Mullen
Smart
Stoops
Jimbo

All better coaches than O. Most LSU fans forget the school recruits itself. I would love to see a guy like stoops get a job at LSU.

LSU has no excuse for not being about as good as anyone in America. The leadership has been in place one time in the relative recent past. Saban. And the fans basically ran him off. A football mad environment with tremendous athletes in state and zero competition in state for them. But they are perpetually dogged by a lack of something. Now it's money. At some point you have to call it like it is: the people there and somehow he culture is not conducive to sustaining a program that reaches it's full potential, Hell of a program but perpetually just short. Orgeron has closed the gap but????

And you are wrong about AU. They are survivors. Share a state about the same size as La with the old South wealthy and heritage loaded program in Tuscaloosa yet they thrive. Why? Because of their culture of doing what they must to do so. And an extra drive and energy from doing so. Plus Georgia and Florida. They pick around the edges of those states recruiting athletes (and students) who their culture appeals to and those schools can't take them all. They're both better lead and smarter and moreover possess more drive than do most. So they won't dominate but they will be in the game. A&M has money and is a player. They will "some years" be in the mix for the top. The Mississippi schools have to cheat which is fine as long as they keep it in state. It's when they go outside and step on toes that they get in trouble. So they are limited. Arky has a people problem.
