Using the BCS Rankings and the College Football Playoff Rankings, I am curious just how many SEC teams would get into a 12 team CFB Playoff.
Im gonna go ahead and assume Notre Dame gets their BS treatment of being considered for the highest conference champion in these scenarios(which ironically would benefit the SEC):
1998: Tennessee, Texas A&M*, Florida
1999: Alabama, Tennessee, Florida
2000: Florida
2001: Florida, Tennessee
2002: Georgia
2003: LSU. Tennessee, Georgia
2004: Auburn, Georgia, LSU
2005: Georgia, Auburn, LSU
2006: Florida, LSU, Auburn, Arkansas
2007: LSU, Georgia, Missouri*, Florida
2008: Florida, Alabama,
2009: Alabama, Florida, LSU
2010: Auburn, LSU, Arkansas, Missouri*
2011: LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina
2012: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Texas A&M, South Carolina
2013: Alabama, Auburn, Missouri, South Carolina
2014: Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss
2015: Alabama, Ole Miss
2016: Alabama
2017: Georgia, Alabama, Auburn
2018: Alabama, LSU, Georgia
2019: LSU, Georgia, Florida
2020: Alabama, Texas A&M, Florida, Georgia
*denotes not a member of the SEC during year
List of SEC Teams that would have made it at some point:
Alabama
Arkansas
Auburn
Florida
Georgia
LSU
Mississippi State
Ole Miss
Missouri
South Carolina
Texas A&M
Tennessee
Closest Kentucky got was 14th in 2018. Vanderbilt was not in the stratosphere.
The SEC would have had at least 3 teams in 74% of the time and 2 teams 87% of the time
And yes the SEC could have had 6 teams in the playoffs in 2012.
And Finally Nick Saban would have taken 3 different programs to the playoffs. As Michigan State in 1999 finished in the top 10.
Most appearances:
Nick Saban: 14
Alabama:12
LSU:11
Florida:10
Georgia:10
I mean is this what you want College Football?

Ranking before the bowls or end of season?
Arkansas would have been mighty close to getting in, in '98

Arkansas was close in 2006 and 1998. 13th in both Final BCS Rankings

Imagine expanding the playoffs to 12 to "create more national parody" and find out you let 6 SEC Teams in

Are we sure? Remember Ohio State was ineligible.
Top 6 conference champs: Alabama, Oregon, Kansas State, Florida State, Northern Illinois, Boise State
At-Large: Notre Dame and Stanford would be in for sure. Likely Oklahoma as well for "balance". That would leave only 3 slots for SEC schools.

We made it 3 times in 7 years…I’m hanging a fkn banner

Those three slots will still not be given to the rest of the SEC teams!

UGA and Florida both went 11-1 in regular season, UGA lost a heartbreaker in the SECCG to Bama(shocker). I feel confident at least UGA and Florida would have made it. I don’t remember the rest of those team 2012 record or ranking.

Parody lol
On a serious note, imagine accomplishing every task set in front of you and still never getting the chance to play for a championship. All based off speculation by a committee formed by representatives from other conferences. Does any other sport have anything remotely similar where you can finish the season undefeated and still not win a championship?

frick yes, LSU would have had 7 more opportunities in that time frame to have a shot at it. With playing in the West and having to play FL every year....this is huge for LSU. Bowl game traditions can go F off

I'm pretty sure that with this 12 team farce the committee is going to take things like that into account and rank accordingly. Going back in time and just picking 1-12 isn't gonna be the same as if the committee were putting out their rankings with the knowledge that 12 teams are in instead of 4.

This will be like affirmative action.
The actual best teams- the real top 12- will not all be present in the CFP.

Not necessarily. It depends on how they treat Notre Dame. I don't think they will let a top rated Notre Dame team bump a conference champion. If they tweak it to where a top-5 rated ND goes plus the 6 top-rated conference champions, it would have been:
1. Notre Dame
2. Alabama
5. Kansas State
6. Stanford
12. FSU
15. Northern Illinois
19. Boise
The 5 remaining teams would have been:
3. Florida
4. Oregon
7. Georgia
8. LSU
9. Texas A&M
