John McEnroe and James Blake played college tennis historically.

There are currently 15 players in the top 100 who played college tennis. List of them

And before you say that’s not many, tennis is a more international sport so it not US based like wrestling is.

Also there are several schools with both men’s tennis and wrestling. Like Cornell who is great in wrestling and top 30 in men’s tennis.

OK, I expected five, and maybe one American. I think there’s still just a couple Americans on there though. Certainly it’s getting better, but do people watch?
I knew a guy who was top at Kentucky 50 years ago and I knew things were better then.
25 years ago, it was just kids who lived at one of the Florida academies and went pro ASAP who even had a chance. I knew a couple guys who went down there for a year and their game IQs went up about 100x. Still a title9 waste compared to wrestling or hockey though.

D1 wrestling is the top of the sport. The athletes move on to the Olympics, to be great coaches, and also go pro in everything from MMA to WWE.
I can’t think of a famous pro tennis player who even finished high school and there are lots of competitive opportunities at every level of college for amateurs who want to play while getting an education. D1 tennis isn’t on the map as far as the sport goes, so why have it?

This is the case with most college athletes. It is the end of the line after their college career. I don't mind that you prefer wrestling to tennis, but I just don't see any reason to say college tennis does nothing for the sport itself. NCAA sports should not be primarily for a jumping off to professional sports imo, even though that is how it is viewed in by many and maybe by most.
