This is ironic, because I remember back in the '70's and early '80's when OU ran the wishbone, anytime we went to Columbia they'd have grown the grass to about shin high to slow it down. It was laughable. That being said, when I was on Owen field in the early '80's it was carpet, with about a 3/4 inch compression, but the arch at the center of the field was so high you could only see the heads of the players standing on the other sidelines and you were running downhill toward the sidelines. I actually got a hairline fracture in a metatarsal in '83 from it when I turned my ankle on a cut.

I remember the complaints about Mizzou's grass very well.

As far as the "arch" on Owen field. It is called a "crown" and believe it or not, they cut the crown way down when they installed the turf in 1970. Before that (when it was grass) it was even higher.

Then when they went back to grass in 1994, they completely removed the "crown". Pancake flat now.

STFU. We have invested millions into our facilities and they now rank in the top 25.

Thanks, I couldn't pull that word out of my brain :)

Yes, it was obvious.

I think we had problems with grass

We've had problems with both turf and grass at various times. The main problem is we have a fall rainy season. Campus hills and the river make for unique problems.

When we get heavy fall rains in late summer/early fall it can lead to problems if a game is played on it too soon. It's one of the reason we now have a ridiculous drainage system.

We've tried bluegrass, bermuda, mixture of grass reinforced turf etc. Between cold weather and rain, by November the field was a mess.

UK installed an underdrain system under their grass field and still the combo of rain and freezes left the field marginally playable.

The KHSAA championships for 6 divisions is played there in late November. Turf was the better option.

People hated turf so much I doubt we'd ever bring it back. But one problem that turf caused us was that it contributed to sink holes on campus because that water wasn't absorbed the way it would've been with grass.

Maybe they could solve that now, I really have no idea. I like the grass but it has meant that Neyland has had to remain more off-limits to things like jubilees/jamborees and championship games than it would've been otherwise. Especially since those early games are murder on a rain soaked field.

Did you see the part where I mentioned facilities?
Because I didn’t. And I don’t care what you’ve invested in your program.

I just think mizzybilt is second rate and here you are spazzing like the other mizzybilt fans that can’t take criticism of your second rate program.

Deal wit it.

They put grass in the late 90s. Didn’t take and came up in clumps. The stadium is nearly 100 years old and the field is dug down to the bedrock. Ain’t gonna happen.

If you brought artificial turf back to Neyland there'd be people hanging by the neck in the streets

The short growing season up north can’t help either.
