Never really cared to much for NFL. Then around 2005 I picked the Saints because Bush ended up gong there and he was electrifying to watch. After that I stuck a feather in my hat and called it macaroni.

Lets say I am a Tulane fan and one of my favorite Tulane players winds up playing for the Saints. Not hard to understand being a fan of the Saints while not a fan of LSU. Now if I am really old and Tulane was in the SEC at the time then I could be a Saints fan now.

For a long period of time, the only NFL teams in the south were the Saints and the dolphins, so of course you are going to have people "pick their team" out of proximity and that ends up being passed down.

Same with the Cowboys, Chiefs, Royals, Cardinals, Braves, Mavs, Spurs, Rockets, etc grabbing fans in neighboring regions that do not have pro teams.

Seriously though. I didn't know any Saints fans (most were Cowboys or Titans) until Brees got there. I guess that could be explained by being around the time social media blew up and I just became more aware of other people's fan affiliation though. :

Who is your college team?

Division games get complicated. Have Cam at Carolina, the s/o lives in Atlanta and my brother lives in Tampa. I almost rather not watch division games

The Cowboys were southerners main team for a while. I don't ever recall a big Saints following.

But now...

I'm surprised at that, I figured a large portion of the Ole Miss fanbase would be saints fans pre-brees due to Archie playing there and the fandom being "passed down" within the family.

In my area, the Cardinals are huge, stems from being popular back when locals Dizzy and Daffy were pitching for them. The Royals and Rangers are closer franchises now.

I forgot about them, but the point is the same.

It was 3 teams (unless you count Texas) compared to 3 in Florida, 1 in GA, 1 in "Carolina", 1 in LA, 1 in TN...

No, you're right. Dale is 100% wrong. The Cowboys were HUGE for a long time. And there were plenty og Houston Oiler fans and then there were plenty of Tennessee Titan fans.

The Saints influx is fairly new.

Hell, I lived in LA and there were almost as many Cowboy fans as Saints fans! Maybe more.

Because the Saints have won a SB more recently. Not that hard to figure out.
