SEC Depth

It's only been one week so far, but to me, the NIL/Transfer portal era is really starting to show itself. The gap between the haves and the have nots in college football is widening, and you can really see it in the SEC.
I personally prefer parity in sports. You see it in the pro leagues and it's great. Seeing the P4 continue to distance themselves from the G5 is not ideal in my mind. However, the good news is that this new era is going to mean more parity at the highest levels. Much like SEC baseball, you're going to see several SEC football teams make playoff runs in the coming years. It's not going to be just Bama, UGa and LSU. I think that before long Texas, OU, Mizzou, A&M, Ole Miss, Auburn, Tennessee and eventually Florida are all going to get to the playoff and do some damage there. And, depending on coaching hires, others could do it, too. Furthermore, as deep as the league is, there will be some damn good 9-4/8-5 SEC teams.

It’s still going be the same handful of teams to win that have won it since 1999.

Ole Miss is the new Clemson and Lane is the new Dabo.

It is having a major effect and has since the beginning. Coaches are just getting better at using the portal now. At some point soon though the brakes have to be put on this thing and slow everything down a bit or it will get so far out of hand that the sport will be damaged beyond repair. It’s getting real stupid that a whole recruiting class can walk off after a season and go somewhere else. It can be a really good thing with a few limits and controls on it. Until thin though you gotta play them game if you are a coach to win.

I saw GaTech roll FSU. I saw Fresno State play Michigan tough. The same for Idaho against Oregon. There are many, many other examples. No one spends like the aggies and they still can't find a QB who can hit an open receiver.
I know you guys are looking for any reason to attack the free market but just calm down.

This.
People keep complaining that NIL is ruining/has ruined the game, but the no penalty transfer portal is doing more damage than anything. It's ridiculous.

A lot of people thought that the transfer portal would help with parity.
I always thought that belief was silly. While there are guys who "transfer down" to get playing time, the reality is those are guys who generally are misses at the higher ranked school. Meanwhile there are a lot more who "transfer up" to those top schools from lesser programs.
UGA loses a lot of numbers to the portal every year. But for the most part UGA is clearing space for new recruits. They're not losing very many guys they want to keep. Meanwhile, they fill holes where they've missed in recruiting with top players from lower level programs.
It definitely helps a team like UGA more than those in the level or two below them.

Yeah I want to see teams built and then use the portal to tweak. I don’t want to see players leave in mass because some other school offered more money. That’s the NFL not college. We need some limits on things to keep it fair for everyone.

Many of the transfers to UGA have one thing in mind. Go to a program where you will be coached up.
When I talked with Etienne last Spring, he didn't dislike Florida, but at the same time he felt like he wasn't getting prepared well for the next level.
As Kirby has said, 98% of your skill set is perfected on the practice field. The other 2% during the games just highlights your progress.
