Nick Saban (Alabama, LSU, Michigan State, Toledo): 56-36; .641
Les Miles (Oklahoma State, LSU): 41-24; .630
Steve Spurrier (Duke, Florida, South Carolina): 65-49-1; .565
Kevin Sumlin (Houston, Texas A&M): 11-10; .523
Mark Richt (Georgia): 38-35; .520
Gus Malzahn (Arkansas State, Auburn): 8-8; .500
Bret Bielema (Wisconsin, Arkansas): 12-26; .316
Hugh Freeze (Ole Miss): 5-11; .312
Gary Pinkel (Toledo, Mizzou): 18-40; .310
Dan Mullen (Mississippi State): 4-25; .137
Butch Jones (Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Tennessee): 1-16; .058
Derek Mason (Vanderbilt): 0-4
Mark Stoops (Kentucky): 0-8
-------------------

Butch Jones WTF?

Pinkel took a while to get Mizzou going, interesting totals though.

Richt doing less with more, per usual.

This is from Saturdaydownsouth. Corrected % for Bielema, as divided by losses instead of total games.

It's ranked at the time of the game because Mullen has only beaten one team that finished ranked in the final AP poll.

what was Sumlin's record against ranked teams while he was at houston? just want to know if he was consistently beating teams as an underdog.

Spurrier's would be better were it "end of season" rankings.

would be interesting to see record vs ranked teams while at current school. Miles' record likely better vs ranked at LSU than was at OSU. Saban's record vs ranked likely better at Bama than it was at MSU or LSU. Conversely, Spurrier record at USCe may not be as good as it was at UF.

in 2014 every SEC team the Hogs played ranked at least 17; 6 of the 8 games in top 10

in 2013 6 of the 8 were ranked; 3 top 10

2-12 last two years trying to rebuild. rough facing ranked teams every game while digging out of the Petrino attrition and John L comedic season

I always prefer end-of-season rankings for these sort of evaluations, because they tend to emphasize the quality of the opponent over the entire year, not just how good voters thought they were at gametime (often based on limited data, particularly in early-season contests).

For example, Miles' victory over AU in the stiff dew in '13 is not included in the above numbers, even though the team he beat finished 13 seconds shy of being BCS champs. But he gets credit that same year for wins against TCU (ranked #20 preseason) and Florida (#17 when they played in October) - despite the fact that those two teams finished the season with 16 losses between them.

Only thing that matters is ranked at end of season. Anything else is bullshite.

Bert was 1-5 vs Ohio State in the B1G which contributes mightily to his ineptness against ranked teams. He sucks against ranked teams wherever he is.

Butch is 1-11 vs ranked teams at UT, which is unimpressive but he's had to build the program up from burned down ashes left by Dooley while dealing with brutal schedules (esp 2013). Many of those L's have been closely fought contests, so to some extent he's been given a pass so far, but this is the year where he needs to turn a couple of those hard fought losses into big wins. For the first time in about 8 years, we have a team that can compete toe to toe with the big boys on both ends of the ball, and Butch needs to finally put up some quality W's this year (he only truly has one so far.)

Only looking at 'ranked at the end of the season' doesn't factor in how a team was performing at the time the game was played. Many teams peak before getting worn out because depth or players injured later in the season.

I think he's gonna turn the corner this year. He's got the players to get over the hump.

Not so blind resume test

(At current job):

Coach A
136-48 (SEC 78-34)
2 Conference Titles
5 Division Titles
2x SEC COTY
8 Top Ten finishes
3 Top Five

Coach B
28-11 (SEC 13-11)
0 Conference Titles
0 Division Titles
1x SEC COTY
1 Top Ten Finish
1 Top Five Finish

Ouch.

I'll take "Less with more" please.

Or they were overrated because they really hadn't played any quality opponents to deserve their inflated ranking.

Saying Richt has underachieved is a compliment to UGA...

When Sumlin took over for A&M the roster was not anywhere near where it needed to be. He was fortunate to have a lot of multi year starting seniors but the team was thin, built for the big 12, and had HUGE roster holes.

Facilities, recruiting, etc at A&M in 2011 and UGA were not even in the same weight class. We've only just now begun to build the program.

Richt's not awful, he has a winning record against ranked teams, he's been very consistent at UGA, but I'm not the first to point out he could be doing much more.

Even Sumlin has done more with less. Good try brah.

You will be competitive I agree. Not toe to toe, but you guys should have a good season ahead
