Bowl games were a thing in 1970, but they lost their bowl game. How could they have remained at #1 if they lost the last game they played in? Especially since they lost by 13?
Championships were awarded before bowl games.

Ok...but wouldn't the loss in the bowl game indicate that the poll (Coaches Poll) made a mistake? I think the AP awarded theirs after the bowl game...but i had to look it up and you are correct. Coaches Poll awarded pre bowl game. It just seems odd that Texas would claim it.

Technically we should have three (1919, 1927, and 1939) but we originally declined the 1927 MNC since we felt that we should have the 1919 one since we were unscored on that season. We’ll go with one.

That’s the one they are most proud of: the last all white NC team.

Interesting argument. Y'all should give back your 1942 title. AP had you at 2 in their final poll.

Try the past quarter of a century.

I've personally looked at their 3 national championship trophies in their own trophy room in Austin.
Are you saying they forgot about the 4th one?
We claim 1970. Just like you claim 1964 and 1973. Y'all lost to us in the Orange Bowl after 1964 and to the Irish after 1973. That's how titles were handed out back then and we all get to keep 'em.

My post had nothing to do about the AP poll not picking you. It had everything to do with losing your bowl game. I guess you could argue one affected the other, but I don't recall another team that lost their bowl game and did not drop in the era in which bowl games were looked at as anything more than an exhibition game.
I don't care one way or the other about Texas....meaning I don't have anything against you. I just thought it odd that y'all claim a title in which you lost the last game of the year in an era in which bowl games mattered.
I mean, can you name a team that lost their bowl game and still claimed a title in the last 50 years?
As for 1942, we were the consensus pick.

Not any more odd than Bama claiming their 1973 championship. Same deal.
Coaches Poll (UPI) finally got tired of having their "champ" get beat in a bowl game so they started awarding after bowls in 1974.

You have to laugh at the way college football chose to pick their champions for over 100 years. The fact that the media found new and different ways to express their prejudice is comical and an indictment of the corrupt system. The best teams never played each other. Let's start there.

Bama, OU, Texas.
UGA has a better argument than UTjr.

Every singe team that was voted #1 in the AP or Coaches poll claims a title that year even if they lost or outright refused to play in a bowl game.
