Sankey receiving threats?

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was allowed to enter and leave the 19th Judicial District Court through a private entrance Thursday after threats were received in connection with the high-profile eligibility case, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sankey testified for nearly three hours at the Baton Rouge courthouse as part of a lawsuit involving athletes challenging NCAA and SEC eligibility rules.

“Given the high-profile nature of today’s proceeding and security concerns, including threats received in connection with the matter, a request was made for Commissioner Sankey to utilize an alternate entrance,” East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson said.

Hicks said deputies determined the alternate entrance was an appropriate security precaution.

“Based on the circumstances, we determined that was an appropriate security precaution,” Hicks said. “The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of everyone in the courthouse, including those simply conducting their normal day-to-day business, while minimizing disruptions to court operations.”

Sankey left the courthouse around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, avoiding a large gathering of local and national media waiting for him at the main courthouse entrance.

The sheriff’s office did not provide additional details about the nature of the threats.

Hicks said security decisions are made based on the circumstances surrounding each situation.

“Security measures such as this are considered on a case-by-case basis based on the circumstances at the time, with the safety of everyone involved and the security of the courthouse as our primary considerations,” Hicks said.
