I don't know what that term means when placed together. You either are or you are not a blue blood.
What would you call Texas?
USC?
Michigan?

To further the point, Minnesota was considered a blue blood up until the 60s
The Minnesota Golden Gophers have three national football titles AFTER aTm won their last one. If ESPN is calling aTm a blue blood, they need to say the same about a hockey school

According to their criteria, not any more since Texas, USC and Michigan all had dreadful 2010s
But I think they each three have deserved to be included in the original 8 bluebloods:
Ohio State
Alabama
Oklahoma
Notre Dame
Michigan
Texas
USC
Nebraska (slipping away into Minnesota & Princeton territory)
Then you could argue at least 5 or more teams with majority of success since the 1980s and beyond:
LSU
Georgia
Tennessee (a lot before 1980 but not as much as these other 4 after)
Penn State
Miami

Well we can anchor this thread.
I was gonna try to have some fun reading this thread. Thank you for posting this. It made me stop reading it.

Does Miami really have a better resume than say FSU?
And what ahs Penn State done to be on the list?

quote:Yes. Far more national titles. But I guess you could consider FSU in that second list.

And what ahs Penn State done to be on the list?
2 claimed national titles
2 unclaimed national titles
19 10-win seasons
16 appearances in Fiesta/Cotton/Sugar/Rose/Peach/Fiesta Bowls
That's pretty good consistency

No one is arguing they are blue bloods.
Neither Florida, nor Miami, nor Florida State, nor LSU are blue bloods despite periods of national championship level success.
In the case of LSU, no program that has made the college football playoffs only one time or who went 45 years between their first and second national championship can be considered a blue blood. The 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s were not kind to LSU. The 17 years between 2003 and 2019 can not overcome those 4 decades.

The obsession over this distinction is strange.

What about their legendary steroid use?

Yeah, it's just a historical label really.

There’s a possibility there might be a few zeros left off of some of those fails
But I think my zinger to whiff ratio is pretty darn good around here

You think kids born in 2010 give two shits about your championships when they’re great grandparents were alive
Blue Bloods means less than ever in the NIL era
Minnesota and Yale are technically blue bloods

Definitely was used by some of the guys in the early 80's. You could go into just about any Gold's gym and guys were shooting up in the gym, and there were often college players working out with them in the off season. I was in there and saw them. One guy I remember benched 600 pounds with one leg in a cast. He died young.
But Obsorne started random testing in 1984. He caught one guy the next year.

Yup. That’s literally what a “blue blood” means. Historical.
I just don’t get the constant obsession over discussing it. We all know the programs that have won a lot of football games and been great at marketing their brand.
