wasn't the talent that was the problem. Shula had recruited some true diamonds in the rough. It was the culture and mindset Shula had instilled in the program that proved to be a problem.
Shula had talent but also faced the strain of scholarship limitations. His teams had zero depth and it showed in the fourth quarter of every game. Losing every key player each season with no depth was a blow. I mean, in 2004 we were starting a third string walk on at QB and still gave Auburn a game. People can shite on Shula (who still left Bama with a winning record) but Saban would have had a difficult time winning during that period as well.

Year two with one recruiting class and Shula players went undefeated in the regular season and lost to Florida in the SEC CG.

Shula era and Freeze era pretty spot on….

I remember Mark Richt calling a coach’s second season “that magical second season.” You most clearly see the impact of good coaching in year 2. Auburn is regressing in year 2, and have lost two straight because of coaching, not because of personnel.

In another thread you claimed to have watched Bear coaching Bama as a kid. Bear coached his last game at Bama over 40 years ago. Why lie in that thread?
What a fricking idiot you must be. 2007 was 17 years ago and I was 40. I don’t remember Alabama football the first five years I was alive. I was born in 67 and remember Alabama football at 5-6 years old which would have been 35 of my 40 years at the time. I’m wellmaware of when Coach Bryant was at Alabama because I met him at practice on day in Tuscaloosa. Only time I ever met him.

Thanks to Freeze actually getting them himself.

Yes, it’s actually easier to recruit. You just pay them. And now you have a transfer portal to get players to fill gaps, or like others, completely rebuild/remake your team.

6-6 with what Shula had done. Alabama was as down as I have ever see
Shula didn't leave the cupboard bare. Saban inherited some elite talent. DJ Hall was the program's leading receiver and there were many future all-Americans on that roster: Andre Smith, Leigh Tiffin, Javier Arenas, Rashad Johnson, and Antoine Caldwell. There were also some all-SEC players as well: Wallace Gilberry, Simeon Castille, and Glen Coffee. Shula was just crippled by sanctions and probation, something that appears to be a thing of the past. Saban is also, objectively, a better coach than Shula.
Bama was very competitive under Shula and then in Saban's first season. They lost a lot of games, but I can only think of a handful of games when they were just whipped. 21 of their 30 losses from 2003 - 2007 were by one score or less.

2007 had some amazing moments. The beatdown of ranked Tennessee was certainly one that made me think we were on our way. But, when we beat Arkansas with Darrin McFadden and Felix Jones on a last-second TD by John Parker Wilson, I knew it was just a matter of time. And as it turned out, not much of that.

He had been watching Bama for 35 years in 2007.

Fun fact: Alabama had exactly zero players drafted at the end of Saban's first season.

DJ Hall and Simeon Castille regressed in Saban's first year. That had a lot to do with it. Simeon professed that "water covers 70% of the earth, but I cover the rest" but his interception numbers dropped from 6 to 2 in his senior year.
Also for you Shula haters, the guy nearly landed Tebow. That would have been wonderful for Auburn and Bama as that would have meant the Saban years would have never happened, though Bama would still have some national championships to show for it.

yes it is different because with the transfer portal it's much easier to rebuild a team now

This is true. But Bama had a lot of talent on that roster that Saban didn't bring to Tuscaloosa, including Crimson Tide legends Javier Arenas, Andre Smith, Rashad Johnson, DJ Hall (his receiving statistics are pedestrian compared to Bama's great WRs since 2012 - present, but recall he was the only 1,000+ yard receiver in school history at that time and managed to do so in consecutive seasons).

Outside of Andre Smith, all these guys you mentioned were 3* or worse. Rashad Johnson was a walk-on. Arenas was a late flip from Florida Atlantic. No other SEC school recruited Gilberry.
Go watch any game from that 2007 season - it's pretty obvious Saban did not have alot to work with.
