re: Saban: It's virtually impossible to come up with a defensive scheme to stop RPOs

i agree with Nick that the rule should be changed. Basketball on grass is not what I want to see.

LSU seems to have figured it out....
Bamas defense has a better scoring average than LSU, but they seem to give up huge games to RPO teams, where LSU doesnt

It's not about LSU for me, it's about the sport generally

Bama, who had a statistically better defense, got pounded by the likes of Manziel and Ole miss recently, where lsu managed to maintain them.

How did they manage to lose the last 6 against Bama?

Been a while since I watched much Big 12 football, but TCU used to do the best against spread teams (not so much the past few years?).
I've made the point on this board before, that when these qb's are clicking, nothing stops them.
But they do have bad days sometimes. There were 3 or 4 games Clemson could have lost this past year besides Pitt.
My point is, are you quite certain it is not a statistical thing, you catching these ace qb's when they are off?
I seem to remember you guys losing to Clemson yourself a few years ago. Though Watson didn't play?

They way to stop it is to build your defense with length and speed, a 4-3, and alot lighter in the arse than Bama does
Now, that will keep yall from having the freak dominating games yall do against traditional offenses, but it will allow you to play steadier when you do face the RPO teams

Which we've moved towards over the last 3-4 years.
LB/Safety - 2011
Dont'a Hightower (MLB) - 6-4, 260 lbs
CJ Mosley (WLB) - 6-2, 234 lbs
Jerrell Harris (SLB) - 6-3, 242 lbs
Mark Barron (SS) - 6-2, 218 lbs
Robert Lester (FS) - 6-2, 210 lbs
LB/Safety - 2017
Shaun Dion Hamilton (ILB) - 6-0, 232 lbs
Rashaan Evans (OLB) - 6-3, 230 lbs
Christian Miller (OLB) - 6-4, 230 lbs
Ronnie Harrison (SS) - 6-3, 216 lbs
Minkah Fitzpatrick (FS) - 6-1, 203 lbs
We got burned by Ole Miss and Clemson last year because their QB's were making great throws and great decisions and our CBs got beat 1-on-1 by big, excellent WRs.
We weren't getting run ragged all over the field like Manziel did in 2012. That really doesn't happen to us anymore. Precision spread passing against 1-on-1 coverage has been our undoing.

Don't for a minute think that he has not worked a way to blunt the effectiveness of the RPO and the three yard thing. He whines as a diversion.

It's official. The game has passed up Saban. Either you get rid of him after this season while your program is in tact or you slowly go the way of Joe Pa and Bobby Bowden
RIP Bama
They make nice doorsteps. Not a problem I know for your school

They said the same thing about the Wishbone 45 years ago.
And 10-15 years later, someone figured out how to stop it.
Jimmy Johnson figured out that you stop the wishbone with overwhelming speed. He completely neutered the great Oklahoma teams of the mid 1980s doing this.
The RPOs are a different animal because of the passing aspect. The wishbone didn't have a passing option on every play unless it was a called pass play. The difference between RPOs and the wishbone is that with the wishbone, defenses had to defend sideline to sideline on every play. With RPOs, they have to do this as well, but they also have to cover receivers downfield.

Watson was still in high school. That was the Tajh Boyd team.

The only way for Saban to get the rule changed is to start abusing other teams with the RPO. Everybody would be crying for another "Saban Rule" in no time.

It's not necessary to take every chance one gets to be obnoxious. The LSU poster had a valid point relevant to this thread, it wasn't a troll of Bama. Grow up.

RPO is bush league. Simple as that. I don't like when Alabama does it, and I hate when I see it every other play on Saturday's. auburn might have had 7 plays in their playbook in 2013. It's high school football. But it sells.

The wishbone was completely different. It took advantage of slow defenses. To stop the rpo you need someone disrupting in the backfield almost every play. You can't scheme against it.

That is a good point. I remember Nick Fairley totally disrupting Oregon's offense in the Auburn championship game.
But that stops every offense honestly.
