Expansion has always been about adding TV markets. (That’s only reason MO was added. They bring STL and KC tv market.

That was 10-15 yrs ago. Cable / Satellite is about to go the way of CRT televisions. It’s all about streaming revenues and the network hosts generating revenue. Hell, cable providers can’t even agree on packages being pushed by the National Networks.

The issue with Clemson and Fla St remains the anchor their current Grant of Rights Agmt has around the ACC. Don’t see that working loose anytime soon

Well, go ahead and grab UNC and Duke. We will get some good basketball teams. Set up 2 "divisions" (but really it is just two leagues). Basically, from a football standpoint they would mirror each other in terms of upper tier teams and lower tier. But they gotta stop at 20, this is just getting stupid.

The Old Ones
Alabama
Auburn
Georgia
Florida
LSU
Tennessee
Ole Miss
Miss St
Kentucky
Vandy

The New Ones
Arkansas
South Carolina
FSU
Clemson
Missouri
Texas A&M
Texas
Oklahoma
North Carolina
Duke

If I recall correctly, TX and OK only had a couple years on their contract with their conference so it was easy enough to eat it and go. But I think the ACC GOR is still 10+ years. That's not eatable.

I wouldn’t call A&M or South Carolina babies. We just know how these fan bases are… I mean you have seen the Texas fans since the announcement right? And the God awful Clemson posters?

I’ve never met more annoying fans than Clemson fans. They all felt like they had something to prove. Like bro, I’m just a random guy in an LSU polo, you don’t have to tell me about your rich history. I don’t care!

But what are the damages for each school?

Making up numbers here..
If Wake Forest is supposed to earn $50 million per year until 2036 on their current deal.. and Wake Forest still gets paid $50 million per year until 2036.. aren’t the damages $0?

You could argue that it effects their tickets sold and other things, but that isn’t what the GOR covers from a legal perspective (I think, I’m not a lawyer).

So what are the damages to the remaining teams if they get paid exactly what they were going to get paid?

More like be glad Rebs and Tigers did not join the SWC when invited!

When the SoCon split up it was mostly about train travel and mountains

East of mountains became ACC
West of the mountains became SEC

TAMU and Utx became SWC

The Southwest Conference existed before the Southern Conference even started.

The SWC was founded in 1914. When Arkansas left, we had been in there for 78 years.

The Southern Conference began in 1921.

Just a stickler for history, here. The SEC didn't exist until 1932.

This was in regards to Clemson but I imagine FSU is comparable. Also was written in 2022 so one less year on their GOR but that number would still be pretty staggering according to this.

quote:

breaking the ACC grant of rights deal would require a sizeable exit fee of $120 million, according to ESPN's Andrea Adelson

quote:

The current grant-of-rights deal would require a school to be penalized their annual revenue distribution, which was a little more than $36 million for Clemson in 2020-21, multiplied by the number of years remaining on the grant-of-rights contract. That means if the Tigers joined the SEC in 2024 – the same year as Oklahoma and Texas – Clemson would have to pay roughly $468 million to leave the ACC.

I see adding Clemson and FSU as nothing but positive. Two marquee home games and road trips, geographic and cultural fits. Let the Big Ten stretch itself all over the country and lose its identity while we get stronger without sacrificing anything.
