Not defending the usage of the word, but we should not be so quick to judge something that was often just a sign of the times. Many, many people from that generation who were extremely pro integration and for civil rights used that word just because that’s what everyone they had ever known called black people.

It doesn’t make it right, but it makes it understandable

Both can be true. You could not have had the childhood that Bear Bryant had and not be Old Guard South, but he was practical enough to know he he’d to integrate to win. I can believe it, not out of malice to Bear Bryant or his memory, but because most Southern white men would use the word without even thinking about it. I grew up in the fifties and sixties. In those days, we called a slingshot a N***er shooter, didn’t really think about it, it was just a name. Between segregation and just living in towns with no black residents, I rarely even saw black people, so the term meant nothing personal to me, at the time.

Did what? That happened all the time with no second thought about it. I don’t feel any guilt about it if that’s what you’re after, I was a little kid and that’s the way it was. If you want to crucify someone for something that happened 60 years ago then by all means gfy…

No one thinks a kid was responsible for it, nor that he should’ve miraculously fixed it. But it’s imprinted in your brain because it was fricked up then and a mere child instinctively understood that. And if you don’t want to be crucified, you may want to consider dropping the hammer and nails. Lol

Imprinted or not, we can evolve past that. I know my racial attitudes changed greatly after started working with black people and getting to know them. One can reject now what one believed then.

It is interesting to hear a Texas fan talk about this because Darrell Royal was accused of "old guard south" racist stuff as well. And of course Texas fans will deny it and Texas rival fans will swear that that stories are true.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Bear Bryant was not stupid enough to call a Black athlete the "N" word with a hard "r"... to his face... by 1967.

Still not denying that Reggie Jackson might have heard it that way... but Bryant wouldn't have said it that way.

But Reggie has always been a big mouth and Bryant isn’t around to defend himself. It’s an easy jab at the Bear. Just doesn’t make since to even bring it up unless RJ is looking for sympathy points.

My goodness, why not just say Reggie is "uppity"?

Bear got it right about Reggie.

Jackson hollering about all the "racism and hate" he faced.

BULLfrickINGSHIT!

He was one of the highest paid players. He was all over televison. On every magazine cover. Dated White women almost exclusively. Reggie hats, jerseys, and other merchandise everywhere. He even had his own damn candy bar.

How did he act? Like a racist jackass.

Oppressed my arse.

Why are you only mentioning the Reggie Jackson after he became a MLB superstar?

I wonder if the word was used more in the 1960s or today. I would guess it used more today.

It was definitely used more in the 1960s. White and black people both used the word frequently at the time. Similar to how people used the word fig back in the 90s and early 2000s, but are now more selective to who they say that word around now.

Why are you trying to stir shite? Nothing from my comment you quoted would infer that was my meaning. Maybe YOU are projecting. Ever considered that angle?

I agree that Roy S. Johnson is a racist, but these words are not the words of Roy S. Johnson. This is a quote from Reggie.
