I'd agree this is a good metric.

Or just a fluke, as you pointed out.

No one flukes their way to a Final Four.

If you had ever seen Alabama make one, you'd know that.

Guess that depends on what you considered a fluke.

IMO: NC State fluked to a Championship in 1983. Anyone seeded 5 or lower that makes the Final Four is a fluke.

Revenue is an important conversation when labeling "importance" - because viewership and interest are what generate revenue. Women's basketball and men's hockey generate more revenue than College Baseball. Truthfully, College Baseball is a niche sport - and I don't believe there is any metric to indicate they are a "Big 3" in College athletics.

How about attendance? I mean networks can throw money at WBB for no other reason that being woke. So look up the attendance. College hockey is a regional sport and the SEC doesn't even play it on the varsity level so that is a stretch to call it one of the top 3 sports.

Pretty sure it's held this title well before the phrase "being woke" entered our lexicon.

This has been posted to death, but the crux of the argument is "average attendance vs total attendance".

People who want to say WBB is nothing compare it's total attendance to baseball's.

By that logic, MLB in 2018 was 4 times more popular than the NFL in 2017, because MLB had nearly 70 million in attendance vs the NFL's nearly 18 million.

Of course, that's because MLB played a total of 2415 games in 2018 to the NFL's 256. You average those numbers out, and baseball in America is less popular than baseball in Japan. Heck, it's less popular than cricket in Australia and Hurling in Ireland.
Hurling.

There really isn't a "top 3" sports in collegiate sports.

There's football, and there's basketball a distant second - but despite being a distant second from football, basketball is still further ahead of any #3 sport than it is behind football.

It's like saying you had a great offense because you had the #3 offense in the SEC, but the difference between your offense and #14 was 4.5 points per game, the #2 offense outscored yours by over 10 points per game, and the #1 offense outscored yours by over 25 points per game.

I dont think woke has just started with everyone using the word woke.

So you have one women's basketball game on a weekend and 3 baseball games on a weekend and you think comparing avg attendance is the right metric?

If you want to say your women's basketball team is in your top 3 sports then by all means, go right ahead. Florida gets more fans to a gymnastics meet than either baseball or women's basketball, should they be in the big 3?

Texas A&M: None. (No runner ups)

You would think with the way their fan base acts that they would have 13 different national championships and 4 of those in football. What a joke they are.

Shame we aren't including Women's basketball...UT has had 6 NCs since 1990 in it. It is a bigger revenue sport at UT than baseball...so there's that.

What I am saying is that the argument for #3 is so granular but on so small a scale that there really isn't a #3. That because both of us can easily make arguments about why WBB or Men's Baseball deserves that third slot proves that it's not much of a slot to begin with.

If you wanted a realistic depiction, you'd probably weigh football titles fully, men's basketball titles at half, and either WBB or Men's Baseball titles at about 1/10th.

This board would put baseball 3rd in college sports. That much is pretty clear. The debate over whether there is a 3rd bla, bla, crap is nonsense here.

Well first of all I wouldn't put any sport in the big 3 that can't beat a boys high school team. I will take the top high school boys basketball team in any state and beat the best women's college basketball team in the same state. So when talking about the big 3, the girls are out.
