Over the past couple of days, both ESPN and CFN have published rankings of all 28 teams that have participated in the football playoffs since 2014. Interesting to compare the lists. (Note that both lists agree on which team should be #1. I know, I know...I'm prejudiced, but it would be hard to argue against their choice. The 2019 Tigers were a very special team.)

2020 Alabama

The Tide have three of the top five in the Heisman voting (Mac Jones, Najee Harris, DeVonta Smith). They've bested an SEC-only schedule by an average of 30.2 points per game. Their defense struggled early but has allowed only 14 points per game since mid-October. They could go down as not only the best Nick Saban team ever but also the best team of the 21st century. They just have to finish the job. Easier said than done (see: Nos. 5 and 11 on this list).

Why would they make these rankings when the playoff hasn’t even happened yet?

What a shitty list

The team that went to OT of the National championship isn’t better than the one that got beat 31-3 in the semifinal?

It’s based on what they did before the playoff. That’s the idea at least

I'd assume LSU is number 1. Really all that matters

I agree with 2020 Notre Dame being at the bottom of the list but disagree with 2020 Ohio State being ranked second to last. They're clearly better than 2014 Florida State, 2015 Michigan State, and last year's OU team. I doubt they're going to get obliterated by 35+ points by Clemson in the CFB Semifinal like those three teams did.

Sorry, I didn't notice it was on ESPN+. Here's the ranking:
28 - 2015 Michigan State
27 - 2018 Notre Dame
26 - 2020 Notre Dame
25 - 2019 Oklahoma
24 - 2016 Ohio State
23 - 2015 Oklahoma
22 - 2014 FSU
21 - 2018 Oklahoma
20 - 2017 Clemson
19 - 2020 Ohio State
18 - 2016 Washington
17 - 2017 Oklahoma
16 - 2015 Clemson
15 - 2020 Clemson
14 - 2014 Oregon
13 - 2014 Alabama
12 - 2012 Georgia
11 - 2016 Alabama
10 - 2019 Ohio State
9 - 2019 Clemson
8 - 2020 Alabama
7 - 2015 Alabama
6 - 2014 Ohio State
5 - 2018 Alabama
4 - 2016 Clemson
3 - 2017 Alabama
2 - 2018 Clemsaon
1 - 2019 LSU

I suspect that the 2020 rankings might change a bit after the playoffs. I think these lists are just a way to generate interest leading up to the bowl games. (There's not that much for the reporters to write about right now!)

LSU had 1 appearance on the entire list...and it took Children's Hospital funding to get them the one lol.

As of right now I would have it...

1.2019 LSU
2.2018 Clemson
3.2020 Alabama
4.2015 Alabama
5. 2014 Ohio State

If Alabama wins and goes 13-0 vs 13P5

1. 2020 Alabama
2. 2019 LSU
3. 2018 Clemson
4. 2015 Alabama
5. 2014 Ohio State

That 2016 Alabama was better than all of them. It’s a shame Kiffin caused Chaos on his way out, Bo &Eddie got hurt, and Jalen Hurts couldn’t throw the ball.

Disagree with “clearly”. Ohio State hasn’t looked good this year. Fields looks questionable at best.

A lot is made about this but Alabama’s schedule wasn’t even better this year than LSU’s last year, WITH the Bon P5 schools we played. That’s how bad the SEC is this year

lsu gave up: (rank of opp offense) points given up

#2) 41 Points
#4) 25 Points
#6) 28 Points
#17) 38 points (first game)
#28) 20 points
#29) 28 points
#49) 10 points
#62) 7 points
#65) 6 points
#70) 3 points
#74) 13 points (Mississippi state the mighty SEC school, below Georgia Southern and Utah State)
#81) 37 points (Ole Miss also below)
#110) 20 Points (Arkansas too?? Wow)
#125) 38 points (obvious outlier not to mention 2 touchdowns not given up by defense)

Which means LSU played an average of the 52 ranked offense in the country

Alabama on the other hand:

#11) 46 Points
#13) 48 Points
#34) 24 points
#39) 17 Points (LSU is the 4th best offense that’s kinda sad)
#41) 24 points
#80) 19 Points
#86) 3 Points
#87) 13 Points
#107) 3 Points
#108)17 Points
#109) 0 Points

Alabama’s average offensive rank of opponent: 65

So Alabama played worse offensive teams than lsu while giving up far more points per game to the higher ranked offensive teams, who’s defense was better?

And I figured might as well look at offense as well

Offensively based on defensive rank of team played

Lsu: (rank of opp defense) points scored

#1) 37 Points
#3) 42 Points
#7) 42 Points
#13) 46 Points
#17) 20 Points
#39) 50 Points
#60) 58 Points
#64) 63 Points
#65) 45 Points
#70) 55 Points
#73) 36 Points
#90) 42 Points
#97) 66 Points
#124) 56 Points

Average 51 ranked defense played

Alabama:

#20) 41 Points
#27) 52 Points
#36) 42 Points
#47) 63 Points
#60) 41 Points
#63) 52 Points
#72) 48 Points
#85) 38 Points
#97) 52 Points
#99) 55 Points
#122) 63 Points

For an average of the #66 defense faced.

There is no way to slice it where Alabama has faced remotely tougher competition

ESPN's list is decent, the ND ranking in the CFN is a joke though
