so why do you have some as date of incorporation and some as settlements?

Tough call to determine just when a city "began". If a military fort was established there originally, isn't that for all intents and purposes kind of like a functioning community--with a structural hierarchy, rules, etc.?...even if it weren't incorporated yet?

They might as well claim St. Augustine. I do have a bottle of water from the Fountain of Youth.

Crazy to think my family arrived in the Ozarks before Fayetteville was even a city.

The declaration of Texas A&M's existence as a flagship institution of the state decreed that there be a campus in Austin, Galveston(unless the deadliest hurricane in the history of the country didn't hit Galveston itd replace Houston as the 4th or 5th largest city in the country or whatever it ranks) and one near Bryan.

A mandated A&M campus... in Austin?

You are confused.

Don't think Galveston was "decreed" as a future A&M campus either way back in the 1800's.

You are confusing the fact that The University of Texas is in Austin, the UT medical branch was placed in Galveston -- both by statewide popular vote in the 1800's -- and that A&M is a constitutional branch of The University of Texas (but in practice never was a branch).

Sec. 13. AGRICULTURAL AND MECHANICAL COLLEGE. The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, established by an Act of the Legislature passed April 17th, 1871, located in the county of Brazos, is hereby made, and constituted a Branch of the University of Texas, for instruction in Agriculture, the Mechanic Arts, and the Natural Sciences connected therewith.

That is cool. Not too many centuries after the settlements in and around the Knoxville area, which were established during the Woodland Period (1000 BC - 1000 AD). There is still a Woodland era burial mound off of Neyland Drive.

Actually the City of College Station was incorporated in 1938. We are coming up on our 75th anniversary.

The United States Postal Service designated College Station as an area to deliver mail in 1877.

It was only a train stop for years, thus the moniker "College Station".

Until the mid-1970's state law prevented state employee's ie professors from running for office. It was a pretty good city then. Then the law was changed and egg heads started running for office and the all wanted to establish a liberal bastion like Austin. They screwed up the city for while, now more "non-egg heads" are involved and the city is starting to recover.

The City of Bryan was established in 1836 and at the time was about 12-15 miles north of College Station. Today, it looks like one continuous city.

Without the Alamo, A&M could have been the University of America del Norte East, with
the main campus in Austin and playing soccer.

I knew this thread would turn into a pissing match.

"ACTUALLY! My schools town is soooo much older! You see there was this one guy named Jim who pitched a tent here in 1542 and made good with the Indians. Thus my town is the GREATEST and OLDEST!"

This thread proves that God has forsaken the SEC rant.

A pissing match about one shithole being older than another shithole, why?

Pop quiz, what is the oldest City in Mississippi?

Biloxi I believe. But Natchez is the oldest permanent settlement on the Mississippi River; older the NOLA by 3 years.

People have a hard time understanding that sometimes they suck.
No one wants to suck, and they will try to convince others (but mostly themselves) that they don't suck.
Although they have no control over when their city was founded, they will try any and all means to give themselves creditibility instead of admitting they suck.

Oxford, MS. 1832

The other Oxford was approaching 1,000 year anniversary before Oxford, Ms came along.
