The purpose of conferences today is to generate money. Everything else is secondary. Academics mean almost nothing as long as you don't embarrass your conference mates. Track championships and other unwatched sports mean less than nothing.
What you did in the past is only meaningful in how well it predicts what you will do in the future and how big your fan base is to drive TV contracts.
TV market size and state population matters, but must be discounted by fan percentage and loyalty.
Given that and making some wild guess about the future and how to weigh Football, Basketball, and Baseball:
Group A: Alabama, Florida, A&M, LSU, Georgia
Group B: UK, Tenn, Auburn
Group C: Mizzou, SC, Arkansas
Group D: Ole Miss
Group F: Miss St, Vandy
Excellent post.

No way you can convince A&M is a more valuable team, especially when they have largely accomplished nothing in their entire history and they are the 2nd most popular team in their state at best
Texas: 27 million people
Alabama: 5 million people

22 of which are Texas fans

Psst Dear LSU/Ark fans no one knows, cares or just in general gives two fricks about college track outside of the Athletes and Parents, the country cares about track every 4 years in the summer.

LSU (Houston area mostly)
All have large fan bases in Texas. aTm is 2nd or 3rd on that list but at most it's probably only 5 million or so.

I don't think the disparity between the numbers of Texas v. A&M fans in Texas is as big as you think, especially around the Houston area.
Also, ESPN and CBS don't care what team you cheer for as long as you watch. If A&M being in the SEC means UT fans watch SEC games cheering against A&M, that still adds value to the conference. I watch a lot of Auburn games even though I am an Alabama fan.

Swap Mizzou and Tenn (Mizzou's state has a much larger population and Tenn is now a Minnesota) and this list nailed it.

So are you telling me you care about softball and gymnastics more?

I hate to hurt the feelings of some of the nicer TAMU fans here, but I pretty much have to agree too. The series between the two is far too lopsided overall for a couple of years of divergent levels of success to change the perception. Or even a decent decade, like the '80s. The Austin Shitty Gimlets are 76-37-5 against TAMU. You gotta work overtime to undo the perception with that sort of record over that many games weighing you down.
Agreed that we have more ground to catch up.
But one key point that EVERY troll (aka not you) misses is that A&M's boost the last two years is not just JFF. Being in the SEC doesn't put us above Texas automatically, but it does make it so we never fall behind a Baylor or a Tech and that we are a legitimate #2 ala Auburn, Mich St and FSU.

I respect your honesty.
My point in previous posts, is that two years of being better doesn't change 100 years of Texas being the program in the state.
It is my opinion that the only former big programs that will continue to stay down, mare Nebraska and Tennessee.

I think the UK basketball program generates enough national interest to justify a Group A rating. We have replaced Duke as the most hated program in the country. More articles are written about Coach Cal and his program than about any other college basketball story.

I honestly can't imagine the SEC without any of the schools except aTm and mizzou and I'm sure in time I'll feel the same way about them. I would have preferred the SEC stayed at 12 but it is what it is. It's also to soon to tell how adding a&m and mizzou will affect the conference.
