To have a fair and accurate assesment of a complete coach in college football, you have to combine coaching ability, playcalling skills, recruiting and game management. That being said, here is how I see them:

1. Meyer
Does all mentioned the best averaged

2. Spurrier
Years previous of the above mentioned get him up here

3. Miles
Close 3rd to the other two..lost points with some playcalling spots, great recruiter though.

4. Saban
Good recruiter, really good x's and o's..although too much confidence in his abilty refusing to make adjustments or be questioned have burned him before. Always seems to lose a game he shouldn't once a year.

5. Tubberville
Decent recruiter competing in state of Bama with Bama, Georgia, Tennesse, Florida. Okay X's and O's.

6. Richt
Good recruiter...gotta win the big one and he will go up

7. Fulmer
Mr. Consistent in winning until recent times

8. Croom
Putting State back on the right track..hard to recruit kids to Stark Vegas..glad they gave him some time.

9. Johnson
Does a lot with a little

10.Petrino
Unproven...judgement witheld until a later date

11.Nutt
Also makes his talent work for him..but you'd like to think he could have won more with the Darren McFadden / Felix Jones show in town

12. Brooks
Started off making some noise...still just a basketball school.

1 - Spurrier - Not saying i like the man, but he brought Florida on the map, helped establish the SEC's current dominance, and USCe has gotten better since he arrived

2 - Meyer - look at what he did pre FLA, and to win a title in two years after taking the team over when it was in somewhat of a disarray

3 - Tuberville - brought winning to Ole Miss, consistancy to AU

4 - Saban - Made MSU competative in a state that was all about Mich. Look what he accomplished in 5 yrs at LSU, and look at bama recruiting

5 - Miles - Brought OSU out of OU obscuriety. strong LSU recruiting and awsome record

6t - Rict/Fulmer - Fulmer has a title, and SECC appearences. Both have consistant dominance in SECe. Both are what have you done lateley's though

8 - Croom - look what he has done with what he has to work with at MSU

9 - Nutt - Arkansas always found a way to stay in the top 3 in the west, with a number of SECC appearances, but loses alot of points for his team managing (latter ark career scandles)

10 - Petrino - Potential great, but stay somewhere long enough to prove it's not a fluke

11 - Brooks - need more on his resume

12 - Johnson - Doing well with the conference graduation bumper, but then again does vandy really support it's athletic department?

just not seeing how u can put a non title winning coach in TT above les.

Maybe he thinks TT's undefeated, 13-0 season was more impressive than Les' 11-2 season that ended in a national title.

I think what elavates Meyers and Miles above the rest of the pack in the SEC is that they do it all. Great recruiters, excellant game day coaches, good X's and O's coaches and game preparation and both are well liked by their players.

12. Johnson-probably a damn good coach, but how would you know?

11. Ron Brooks. Its Kentucky.

10. Petrino-ya gotta show me.

9. Sylvester Croom. He just seems like he is moving at a slower speed than most of these guys.

8. Nutt-when THIS guy is arguably eighth, your league plays some ball

7. Fulmer-I think he might stage a comeback-great competitor-better than you think.

6. Mark Richt. Show Pony. Has a dozen hair products in his bathroom.

5. Spurrier-The second best Coach in SEC HISTORY, is only 5th on my list.

4. Nick Saban. Lives and coaches angry-players have to either buy in completely or they tune him out. He landed at the worst possible school. His arrogance doesn't play well anymore and he gets unfairly criticized if he sneezes.

3. Urban Meyer. The one all the other coaches dislike.

2. Les Miles. Loves his players. Old School. Sentimental. Fine Human Being. Flat out best recruiter in SEC.

1. Tubs. Grudgingly. The quintessential SEC attitude-tough as nails.

1. Les Miles - Can't argue with his success the past 3 years

2. Urban Meyer - I can't stand the prick, but he's a good coach

3. Mark Richt - Very consistent at UGA

4. Tommy Tubberville - Face it, he should have a NC

5. Nick Saban - One great season. We'll see how he does at Bama

6. Steve Spurrier - SC is a very well coached team, but the results just aren't there.

7. Phil Fulmer

8. Houston Nutt

9. Croom

10. Brooks

11. Petrino - Before I even rank him any higher, I want to see how he performs in the SEC.

12. Johnson

I thought you said coaching, not recruiting. The term 'coaching' needs to be a weighted average between program/facility manager, recruiting, and gameday coaching. IMO-
1. Miles- may not stay here, needs longevity
2. Meyer- same as Miles
3. Saban- will be interesting to see how he does long term at Bama; weakness- gameday coaching
4. Richt- hard to argue with his record
5. Tuberville- consistancy
6. Fulmer- program hasn't been the same since they lost to LSU in 2001 SECCG
7. Spurrier- think he has lost the fire
8. Nutt- Did more with less at Arky
9. Croom- has turned a dismal situation into a competitor
10. Petrino- needs to prove himself in SEC
11. Johnson- Seems to be a good coach for Vandy
12. Brooks- Curly Hallman like performance last year with Woodson (similar to Favre at USM)

Why is everyone giving Croom the whole "turned around the program" but not think the same for Spurrier?? now i know in Holtzs last few years we were doing better in terms of wins than MSU but in his last 3 years we won 5,5,6 games.. Holtzs last gamed ended in a huge brawl with Clemson and a good number of off-field arrest.
Spurrier has averaged 7 wins in his 1st 3 years.. if you look at our history that kind of consistency is rare for the Gamecocks. Especially after getting beat down after beat down from the big 3 and from Clemson under Holtz.

1a. Miles- National Title 2007, great recruiter, Takes risks(The greater the risk, the greater the reward)
1b. Meyer- National Title 2006, Great recruiter, In a great place to succeed
1c. Saban- National Title 2003, Great Recruiter, I don't want to get blasted so I will leave it at that for now
1d. Fulmer- National Title 1998, Mr. Consistent
1e. Spurrier- National Title 1995, Could slip from this position
2a. Richt- Great Recruiter, Most consistent of all coaches
2b. Tuberville- Not sure if there is a better big game coach in the country
3a. Nutt- Does not get the respect he deserves. Great motivator.
3b. Petrino- In time he may rise higher than this.
4a. Croom- Eh...Great Bama guy...Beat Bama 2x, AUx1, Not buying it. Miss St. takes nose dive this year (If not, he moves up)
4b. Johnson- Good for Vandy. He is in the wrong league.
5. Brooks- Will be seen pacing the sidelines this year asking where Woodson is.

I just said that Croom turned a dismal situation into a competitor. I think Spurrier has done a very good job at USC. It will be more difficult than I think he even imagined making the jump from mediocrity into the top tier of the SEC. I did rate him higher than Croom on the list

Would you put him ahead of any of the other guys ahead of him on my list right now?
