You also realize that outside KY, typically no SEC basketball team is going to be great overnight. It is a process just like football.
Even with a single great recruiting class, it takes time for your players to develop and get in sync.
In truth, this is Howland’s second year for all practical purposes. He inherited 7 Seniors and had Newman (who was and still is a 5 star bust) and Q.
The next year he had Q and basically freshmen, which made it feel like a year one because the roster was brand new, save one player.
For us fans that understand basketball, his normal three year time level is really four.
However, this team has really come on. I think in this particular case, playing multiple games (including two on the road against really good teams) and winning in the NIT was much more beneficial than going one and done in the NCAA.
Now they are going to NYC and the Garden which is really cool. This will serve as a great springboard into next year.

Cal is not that good of a coach.

Most think Cal just rolls the balls out. Like coach K.

I am including Wade's work in adding some quality people to our roster this year in limited time, and his recruiting job for next year's team
Recruiting isn't really a factor in COY discussion, otherwise Calipari would win damn near every year

I don't understand why. There are plenty of other programs that have put together 5* loaded teams and completely fell apart and didn't win
Heck, Sean Miller has never made a final 4 despite signing multiple 5* players on a near regular basis

It's ridiculous. At the very least people should appreciate how his teams ALWAYS play hard. He allows nothing less. They get after it, play his way or they sit their arse on the bench.
Every year he takes a bunch of brand new kids and by about January they are playing hard, solid team defense. The talking points on Cal as a X's and O's coach are so lame and bogus.

I agree, and like I said Howland has hit all the benchmarks so far in terms of progress.
My point was just that it isn't as if he's performed some miracle. He's steadily built and it appears to be ready to take off. State folks should definitely be excited.

Newman (who was and still is a 5 star bust)
Newman was the MVP of the recent Big 12 Tournament, scored 28 points — all in the final 28 minutes — propelling the No. 1 seed Jayhawks to an 83-79 second-round Midwest Regional victory over No. 8 seed Seton Hall on Saturday.

Kennedy is very hard to rank, for a few reasons.
On the one hand, if we had dropped two close games this year, we might not have made the tournament at all. Everybody would agree that he deserved to be near the bottom, and he'd have been fired.
On the other hand, we didn't lose those games. He got great talent on campus, and he overcame all sorts of obstacles this year, and he has the team playing well at the right time. He's won an SEC championship and has a chance for an amazing post season run this year.
He's very, very hard to rank. There are real reasons to be skeptical of him. But I love the dude.

Newman is good for one game a year. He had it against OM for State and then had it in the Tournament game this past weekend for Kansas.
He was a great high school player but at the college level , he is a step slow, a liability on defense, inconsistent shooter but will on a very rare occasion have a singular big game.
Now , I still hope he will turn into a great player but I think he was already at his peak in HS and thus that is why he is an average to good player on the college level (well below the 5 Star credentials he was labeled with).

Hard to have a regular season Co-Championship when the Aggies beat you head to head.
As for Coaches, you are what your accomplishments say you are. Kennedy is in the process of putting skins on the wall.

I laughed when I saw Howland as a tier 3 coach given his career. That was just dumb.
