Broyles probably knew what he was doing at Oklahoma State and was concerned he would do the same at Arkansas. The NCAA did put Oklahoma State on probation in the late 80s.

Hatfield was a safer hire and a former player of his, easier for him to bully and that relationship was strained as well.

They were pretty good when Broyles was in charge and making all the decisions as Daddy Frank.

But it got awful once he was forced to retire and pass on.

That is what made him a successful AD and certainly made Arkansas better in football.

He should have retired in the early 90s when Arkansas joined the SEC and hired former player Terry Don Phillips as his replacement.

He wasn't going to wait on him when he had no plans to retire at all.

So Terry Don Phillips ended up being the AD at Clemson and he hired Dabo Swinney.

He began to mellow out though the 90s as he aged and by the turn of century, was no longer making the decisions as AD and was made by his boss former Chancellor John White.

They never had to make any decisions concerning Arkansas athletics when they relied on Daddy to make it for them.

Since Frank passed, they have been awful. I just think how bad Arkansas athletics would be if he never set foot in Arkansas.

Frank Broyles would have never hired Chad Morris and certainly wouldn't have hired Sam Pittman.

Concerning Bert, I think his personality would concern Frank a lot. His alcoholism combined with his very arrogant attitude would make him believe he would be a terrible fit at Arkansas.

But this depends on the decade.

Holtz always seemed to be extremely arrogant.
He really had a stick up his arse about LSU for some reason.
Also, I remember walking around one of the Republican National Conventions totally sauced. Combined with typical Sylvester the Cat speech, you could barely understand him.

Seems to be an inordinate amount of hate on the board for Lou Holtz. Hardly any mention of the fact that, in his prime, he was an outstanding football coach. And his players – both black and white – didn't seem to believe he was racist.

Trust me. Sulli is right on it. To put it simply, Frank had his reasons(by no means was a Democrat, but was scared to death of politics coming into play).

I'm not questioning that it happened. I just don't understand why Arkansas was scared of it, but MN and ND weren't.

We're afraid of sustained football success.
He may very well have won a national champion had Broyles let him coach and stayed out of his way.

Because after awhile he didn't really want to be at Arkansas and wanted out.

Minnesota was his escape but his final destination was his precious Notre Dame.

He did pretty good with Broyles leftover players such as the 77 season but he failed to keep it going and went 6-5 in his last year.

Mitch Mustain's mom turned on Holtz like she did Nutt later on. It was best not to get her on your bad side, just ask Frank Broyles who also didn't survive her wrath.

Broyles taking up for Nutt is what led to his forced retirement.

The biggest travesty is Butch Davis wanted the job but wasn't taken seriously.

Mitch Mustain.

I remember ESPN airing one of his high school games when that wasn't something that was regularly done. He was going to be THE guy.

He was better off had he not gone to Arkansas.

It was the wrong place at the wrong time.

Very toxic environment.
