I think you mean "acknowledge"...They were indeed awarded by the different publications long before we started saying "Hey, we had NCs before Bryant too"...The University of Alabama didn't fabricate anything that we acknowledge as Championship seasons.

Should they change it to #1.

Up until the end of Coach Bryant's career the #12 meant more than it does now. Under Coach Bryant the number on the Helmet Logo was "special" and a very sellect few ever got to wear it. It was Coach Bryant's jersey number. Many years ago, 3 former #12 Qb's had a restaurant named 12. Within the last year (or so) one of those 3 QB's started a new wine lable called 12. The primary players to wear #12 under Bryant were Joe Namath / Kenny Stabler / Steve Sloan.
After the 2009 BCSNCG ESPN attempted to change it to #13 thinking it was because of the number of championships and they still use 13. But the Alabama Logo is still the #12 helmet.

Shouldn't it have a "13*" on it then?
most media only acknowledges 12. I think 1941 is the one in dispute. The rest are solid.

usually.. I thought it was saying NC's!
And We will see who shows up on 1.09.11
So does anything printed before 1983 show an Alabama helmet with the number 6 on it?

I agree, but it's almost painful when you hear one of them claiming 13.
I could understand them claiming 13 if they claimed 1945, 1966, or something like that, but 1941 is the one that makes me cringe.

I know for a long time the helmets used to always show whatever year it was on the side. An 89 in 1989 for example. It wasn't until later that 12 became the standard I saw everywhere. I see lots of stuff with 13 on it since 2009.

Hre's the answer to all your questions. They went from 6 to 11 thanks to their SID in 1983...

And like I said above, we didn't invent or create those titles...we just acknowledged that there were indeed titles awarded before Bear Bryant's tenure.

Don't forget Pat Trammell, Coach Bryant's favorite player and person.

Every fanbase just wants Alabama to have less and talk themselves into being as great.
Saw some LSU post above said they could claim 7 right now. I guarantee, IF they win this year, they'll try to say we only have 8 and they're tied with us.

Nothing ever effected the Bear like Pat's death. Truly sad.

True, but unlike most programs Bama does claim them and no offense to you since I don't know you personally, many Bama fans use it as some sort of superiority thing to hold over everyone else. As has been pointed out here, other programs could claim many more titles than they do, especially when you go back beyond the 1930's. Auburn for example has been awarded national championships in 1913, 1914, 1957, 1958, 1983, 1993, 2004 and 2010. But like virtually every other program we only really claim the ones awarded by the major services. The main reason Auburn and virtually every other program only claims these titles is to do otherwise just seems to be an attempt to over inflate someone importance.
I'm not saying this as a troll or to start a flame war. I'm mearly pointing out the fact from the outside looking in, to the rest of the college football world, Alabama claiming 13 NC's and bringing it up so much and making such a huge deal about it is beyond absurd. Yes Alabama has one of, if not the, richest histories in college football. But to over inflate that history in this manner is just off putting to others.
