Ugh. So it’s not Texas *Technological* University?
What’s the deal with these shite school names? “A&M” doesn’t even MEAN anything. It’s just a couple of fricking letters left in.

Shortened upon becoming universities vs colleges.. "Indiana Agricultural College" ring any bells?

Thanks for the “explanation.”
And read my profile page.
And P.S. Not that I care, but Purdue was never called the “Indiana Agricultural College.”

Trivial, but that was the legal name established by Indiana Legislature until John Purdue donated $/land.

It’s Agricultural and Mechanical- I assume back in the olden days mechanical had something to do with them being a big engineering school.

"First proposed when Morrill was serving in the House of Representatives, the Morrill Land Grant College Act of 1862 set aside federal lands to create colleges to “benefit the agricultural and mechanical arts.” The president signed the bill into law on July 2, 1862. It granted each state 30,000 acres of western land, to be distributed by each senator and representative, and funded the construction of agricultural and mechanical schools."
All of the Land Grant/Morrill Act" colleges were "A&M" based.

Tech is barely on the radar. They have a small group of very wealthy donors who are trying to change that, but they simply won’t be able to get enough talent to choose Lubbock Texas over Fort Worth or Houston. They also won’t be able to hold onto a really good coach. They are screwed.
They have a top 25 class this year

Doubling down on your public display of stupidity I see. When so many have shown you proof of your idiocy.

There are tons of Texas high school graduates with straight A's that don't get into either Texas or A&M. Texas is now Top 6% for general admission and top 2% for engineering and business. I personally know kids that got into Ivy League schools that were turned down at UT. And because the top 6% rule is statewide, you have a LOT of really smart kids from great public schools (in DFW think of HP, Woodrow, Townview, Hillcrest, Pascal, Pearce, etc.) that would have been auto-admit in my generation that now go to SEC schools. I'd love to see a comparison of the percentage of Texas kids going to SEC schools today versus 20 years ago - I'd be willing to bet it is at minimum a 50% increase.

Under Leach and Dykes, Tech would have been a solid # 3 but in general TCU and (gulp) Baylor have been better football programs over the past 10-15 years. Tech is far away from where the majority of the HS football talent is in the state. Strangely, I like every single Tech fan I've ever met and most of the ones I know are incredibly successful, but their overall fanbase (IMO) sucks. I could see them either doing phenomenally well in the Big 12, or moving behind even SMU in the pecking order within the state. Tech does have money, but SMU has a shitload of money and alums that are willing to spend it plus they have recruited surprisingly well (and smartly) over the past several years. I realize the ACC has a lot of bottom dwellers, but I would not be at all surprised to see SMU punch above their weight from day 1 in the conference.
Lubbock gets a lot of shite as a city, and while it's certainly not Austin, it's not like College Station is any better.

Where does Texas Tech sit in the order of Texas schools, assuming that Texas and A&M are 1 and 2? I used to think it was #3 but not so sure anymore. Do y'all consider them as a rival?
No, they are not a rival. Texas is theirs, but the feeling isn't reciprocal; but the TT gals are muy bueno. Just above a zero chance Texas will play any old B12/SWC schools or a regular basis again other than SEC.
Lubbock is ~ 350 miles from Austin. It is one of the larger Texas schools, but not many UT alumni live in Lubbock. Texas would prefer to play in DFW & Houston for that reason. For comparison, a circle 350 miles in diameter centered in Alabama would capture every SEC town except Fayetteville & College Station.
