I think this speaks volumes of what can happen when you let a stable proven coach go thinking that there is always something better. Fulmer had issues but does anyone really doubt that the Vols would be in a better position now if Fulmer was retained? Look at A&M. How many coaches have they been through since R.C. was let go. Look at the mess Francione created and then Sherman. It has taken Sumlin to start righting the ship. It's not that easy. I think another disadvantage at Tennessee is the recruiting situation. The state mirrors more like Arkansas than Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia or Florida when it comes to highschool talent. Tennessee has to really recruit nationally to get the kind of talented roster it takes to compete year in and year out in the SEC. In most years, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida can stay at home and recruit in state and go out and selectively recruit out of state players. I think the dynamics at Tennessee is just much different. Not saying Tennessee should have kept Fulmer. But when you make that kind of change, it can take a long time to get back what you had and move forward beyond that point. I think it is in the best interest of the conference for a program like Tennessee to be among the top teams in the conference for a whole bunch of reasons. One of the reasons the SEC dominates college football is due to the competition within the conference.

One of the few intelligent people to post on this matter. For this, I commend you.
Look we'd all wish for you guys to keep Dooley and stay down ( ), but it isn't going to happen. He almost didn't make it out of last year. Not even Dooley's mom can save him now.
I look forward to the Chan Gailey era in Knoxville.

Fulmer left the car on a cliff. Kiffin got in, spun the tires for a minute, made a lot of noise, then bailed kicking the car as he left. Dooley got in and floored the damn thing right off.
Just because Mike Hamilton made a football hire off of hair and pants style, doesn't change the fact that Fulmer was no longer competing with the top schools in the SEC. He should have been fired. He should not have been given an extension after lucking into the SEC championship. Just because the hire sucked, doesn't mean you should keep a stinker.

Muschamp inherited a good defense when he took over at UF, so you can't compare that with UT.
One of the top things to look for - I didn't see a Tennesse player quit against SC. They were playing to the end. I would have to give them until next year. If Sunseri doesn't have the defense playing well then you need to make a change. That's why Tenn can't beat any of the really good teams. They are making some good plays, they just allow to many big plays.
Unless you've got a really top notch coach ready to come in, you've got to stick with Dooley.

Might be the best analogy I've seen.

It could have been Dick Jauron, but he's going to Arky. I'll say, at worst, you guys get Dave Wanstedt.
People talking down Boom are revising history again. His defense was average. He took 60 scholarship players to where they are today. This isn't Kentucky, it just looks like it. A good coach will have them competitive next year and in contention within 3. That's how good coaches work.

Exactly. And a good coach will win at least one game out of 21 against a ranked opponent. A good coach will occasionally win one outside of their state.

I understand the 3-5 record, but your losses are to #1, #6, #7, #8, #15 currently in the BCS.
Other than the Bama game Tenn was in every game until the end. Tennessee put up more points&yards against UF,UGA,SC,MSU than anyone else did.
South Carolina has one of the best D in the nation. UT put up 472 yard and 35 points. in comparison, UGA put up 7 points against SC.
Florida couldn't score one TD against Georgia. UT put up 478 yards and 44 points against Georgia.
But at the end of the day 3-5 is what matters. Dooley always find ways to lose close games no matter what. you can just about bet that UT will somehow frick up at the end. every.single.time.
I think UT has 2 options:
1. a big splash hire
2. if it's another meh hire we might as keep Dooley for 1 more year. but DC Sal must go. UT has the worst defense in the SEC and I don't see him turning it around to an elite defense.

We'd have at least 5 wins with a top 50 defense. A defense that was top 25 last year with almost all the same players, and upgrades along the DL (Sentimore and McCullers)
only definite loss would habe been Bama.

In hopes that Gruden changes his mind after a year? Keeping Dooley is pointless.

another shitty meh hire will set the program back even more. it has to be a home run this time.
I have no problem of letting Dooley go, as long as we have a solid replacement in place. I'm not for another panic "zomg who the frick do we hire we don't have time" hire.

Don't disagree. Just saying that it can take longer than hoped to finally find the right guy and right the ship.

I think Kiffin drove it off and Dooley jumped in as it was plunging to the ground.

Maybe, maybe not. Fulmer got lazy. Simple as that. And the fact that he needed David Cutcliffe got completely exposed to everybody.
The fact of the matter is that -- without the benefit of hindsight -- Kiffin was a good hire and was quickly putting the program in a better place than it was under Fulmer. Kiffin leaving put us in a bad spot, but his departure wasn't reasonably foreseeable. So you really can't question the Fulmer firing. It was the correct move.
