I came across a list on social media of the top 5 LSU football coaches in history. Here was the list:
1. Coach O
2. Nick Saban
3. Les Miles
4. Paul Dietzel
5. Cholly Mac
In my opinion that is not the correct order. What are people’s opinion of that list?

I would have said:

1. Les Miles
2. Nick Saban
3. Paul Dietzel
4. Cholly Mac
5. Coach O

HM: Bernie Moore

HM should be DiNardo. He’s responsible for bringing LSU back from the late 80s/early 90s.

Orgeron gets the nod at #1 after building the undisputed, greatest college football team of all-time.

Saban is probably a close 2nd.

Even he has said, multiple times, that his greatest regret in life was leaving LSU. He definitely wishes he was #1, though.

1. Orgeron
2. Saban
3. Miles

Saban showed how powerful LSU could be and how quickly it could be done.

I dont understand how Coach O could ever be 1. He has less SEC titles than Miles, Saban, and Dietzel. All those guys won a natty too. Yes 2019 LSU was the best of them but thats Os only accomplishment. The only reason I could see him getting the nod is that he is a true Louisiana man

Hard to say.

All having won a natty at LSU, what is prioritized most over that? Are we looking at only what they did at LSU or considering their potential?

Highest of the highs?
Reliability of winning seasons?
Consistency over time?
Total dominance and control of the most games?

Saban - reignited LSU, consistent win totals, higher ceiling than Orgeron or Miles.

Miles - large data set, many years competing at high level with a taper at the end, made it to a second national title game.

Orgeron - more exciting and his best team would have handily beat Saban’s and Mile’s best at LSU, but he fell off a cliff at the end.

I’d have to go Saban (made LSU elite again), Miles kept LSU elite and won .770 of his games, Orgeron yes he gave us the best but he was feast or famine.

A valid argument could be made for any order though, honestly.

Nope on O. He shouldn't be in the conversation as the best coach ever at LSU. He was smart enough to stay out of the way of the assistant coaches during the 19 season. I'll credit him for recruiting Burrow to LSU.
