re: Prove me wrong: The end of game Tennessee hit on Mertz wasn’t unsportsmanlike.

Mertz was bleeding the clock, common practice. It was 4th down and taking a knee right after the snap would have given Tenn the ball with time on the clock
Well, yeah. That’s why he was open game to be hit. He didn’t take the snap and go straight down. There is no rule that says you have to let the offense take a snap and then burn as much time as they want so the other team can’t get the ball back. If you don’t want to get hit, you take the snap and go straight down.
Now Tennessee was down two scores so it wouldn’t have mattered, but if that’s a one score game you can’t just say “hey defense, y’all just stand there and let us burn 10 seconds on a kneel down.”

So should it have been UT ball right there with 5 seconds left since it was 4th down (if not for the hit)?
Yes, but the personal foul would have given Florida 1st down.
Tenn would have had the ball if they didn’t hit the QB.

Not only was it a late hit, it should have been targeting as he was defenseless and he hit him in the head....
They should appeal tho so he has to sit the first 1/2 vs SC....

Coaches call that timeout all of the time.
Down 29-16 with 7 seconds left? No they don't.

Helmet to helmet is always a penalty there's really nothing to debate here

Just don't put your helmet on his.
That said, the game was over. This was like when a basketball team is dribbling out the clock. There's no need to do anything. It's done.

I have literally never seen a coach call a timeout while on defense, down by 2 scores, with less than 10 seconds in the game.
Can you link an example? Shouldn't be hard if it happens "all the time".

Except for the fact he put his shoulder into his chin. The ref also threw the flag, right in top of it. Also, KH and CF thought it was Busch league. POS!

He’s right. Ain’t no rule say the dog can’t play basketball.

Heupel’s timeout for no reason but to interrupt a UF celebration was unsportsmanlike.
But Mertz was still running around extending the play with 6 seconds left when Tennessee hit him.
The Tennessee lineman hitting him right as he suddenly kneeled was simply a football move in response to Mertz continuing the play and refusing to kneel.
I'm with you in that the UF plays overreacted if you look at this in a vacuum.
But it was definitely a carryover from the Time Out.
Both sides are trash.

Fat orange Tennessee man needs to get his arse beat

QB was obviously taking a knee. Refs got it right.
Posted on 9/17/23 at 10:11 am to MillerLiteTime
Why didn't UF just punt there? Sure, they could run it back ... but they could also get the ball in better field position with 5 seconds left on the clock after you kneel on 4th down.

Well in theory less chance of an injury, unless the opposing team does something classless

The TO was BS though
I don't think that I have ever seen a more slimy move from a coach.
It should have caused even more penalties except for the fact that some of the refs arms were hurting from throwing so many flags on Tennessee during the game.

No you’re 100% wrong. That was a chicken shite thing to do with that amount of time on the clock and zero chance of winning the game.

The “hit” wasn’t much of a hit at all. If the guy had a do over he could have gotten his 15 yards worth real hit.

unsportsmanlike every time
You must be new to SEC football. The refs are way too inconsistent for anything to be "every time".

Except it was because he was giving himself up. Tell us you don't know football without telling us.

Nothing unsportsmanlike at all about it
He’s lucky he didn’t get laid out
Florida players acting liked little girls is embarrassing
