I’ve been surprised how easily he is tackled in the open field or scrambling in the pocket.
He has some straight-line speed and that's about it. There was a play last Saturday where if he cut back, it was wide open for a TD but he kept running right and was tackled after a one-yard gain. Bama ended up missing a FG on the drive.

He has a little more than just some straight line speed, and he gets to top speed in a crazy short amount of time.

This is the single biggest reasons why QBs don’t make it in the college ranks, or later on in the NFL. It’s difficult to get people to run towards the pressure but that is essential if you’re a QB. Running backwards is bad for everyone on the offense

On designed runs I think he reads blocks well and does use his strength to break tackles
He will run straight at a QB spy though

There's a clear difference in him running when it is designed vs when it is not. Almost doesn't even look like the same guy.

I think he makes an honest to god effort to keep his eyes down field and ends up running straight out of panic

Absolutely. He also tends to float while he is doing that, so by the time he looks up and decides there isn't a throw, he's usually got defenders around him and the invisible defender - the sideline - right next to him.

My opinion, I'm not seeing it. He's still raw at the position after four years.

It's a nice way of saying it takes the thinking out of the play for him. Same goes for elementary school level players.

Guy is a great north south runner and can fly once he gets an opening. However, he lacks the elusiveness and shiftiness of a Lamar Jackson, Mike Vick type to make him really dangerous.
I wonder which defensive coordinators wouldn't consider him really dangerous. He can take it to the house any time he runs the ball and he's deadly throwing over the top. The true definition of a dual threat qb.

Maybe on throwing reads, but I don't think that he doesn't understand when to run. I think that (a) he's trying too hard to find a throw and by the time he decides there isn't one there isn't a place to run and (b) he doesn't have great wiggle. A whole lot of very fast guys who don't have great wiggle in big time sports, and he's one of them.
Designed runs give him a chance to pick a hole and go at full speed. Scrambles require a lot of start and stops and making guys miss. His most successful scrambles are almost always ones straight up the field, and that's because those most closely mirror QB runs where he finds a gap, sticks his foot in the ground and goes.

I mean, if you aren't seeing that he's a terrifying weapon with his legs then I'm not sure what to say. His production with them since about the mid-way point of last year is as good as any QB in the country.
QB Designed Runs - Career
85 rushes
555 yards
6.5 YPA
11 TDs
QB Designed Runs - 2024
23 rushes
202 yards
8.8 YPA
6 TDs
QB Designed Runs - 2023
49 rushes
306 yards
6.2 YPA
4 TDs
QB Designed Runs - 2022
13 rushes
47 yards
3.6 YPA
1 TDs
And he's factually one of if not the fastest QBs in the country in terms of straight line speed per data tracking.

Seeing as I am an Alabama fan and not a big NFL fan, it matters much more to me that he beat the hell out of LSU last season and and will do it again this year.
