I don't disagree with this at all, except you guys would have played Georgia in the SECCG, no?
Yes, I forgot that UGa beat UF that year. Edited my post. Still, the same point applies, although beating UGa in the SECCG would certainly not have been a given.

The only program killing at Alabama was done by a fax machine receiving Mike Dubose support messages.
While not exactly a program killer, our 6-3 upset loss to Miss State in 1980 broke our stranglehold on the SEC. In the prior 9 years, we won 8 outright SEC championships...in the next decade or so, we shared 2...

What other examples can you think of that involved your team or that are significant historically?
I think Alabama killed Texas after the 2009 National Championship

Miami 5 years after:
41-17 (1 10+ win season, and one losing season)
Pretty decent decline.
More so than LSU's
LSU is currently 39-15 post BCS NCG. (2 10 win seasons, last year should have been 3 but a canceled game, and 0 losing seasons)

Yes, but Miami was at the pinnacle of college football. They were almost unanimously #1 during the season. In 1992, Miami had not just won a couple of recent national championships, but they finished in the top 3 EVERY YEAR since 1986. They had lost FIVE games in six seasons.
Of course the 93 Sugar Bowl didn't "kill" their program like the NCAA killed SMU, but if you look at how dominant they were and how deflated they were after, it's pretty remarkable. They finished top 3 every year for six years, then after that game they didn't finish in the top 3 again for the next six years...and while they did have a short resurgence where they won a national title and almost won another, you have never seen the swagger since then. If anyone wasn't alive at the time and following football, it's hard to explain it to them. I HATED Miami more than I've ever hated a program (and truth be told that even included auburn), and that game will forever be my favorite football game in history.

This is so accurate it's painful.
Miami went into that game having read their own bylines, about how Alabama shouldn't even be on the same field as them.
A 21-point demolishing, thanks to a defense that did things to the Miami offense that would be considered illegal in 41 states and Puerto Rico, and Miami and their fans were a fading memory. One brief burst right at the turn of the century, then... nada.

I'm not seeing it.
Since that game LSU is third in the SEC in win% behind Bama and UGA, and 15th in win% nationally. That's not exactly dead, imo.
Agreed. Frustration does not = dead.

2005 Miami game is the perfect answer to the OP.
They were in the Peach Bowl back before it was a big time bowl game. They had already slipped a few notches. IMO, their slide started when they lost at unranked UNC (I believe in 2004). Whatever aura of invincibility was left from the Butch Davis recruiting classes went away that night. They also lost at home to unranked GT in 2005 that knocked them out of the national title race.
agreed. As another guy pointed out also, lsu absolutely drove the nail in the coffin that night for miami, but anyone that was paying attention could clearly tell miami was trending down. Coker was an awful coach, and the Davis recruits were finally gone.
someone mentioned colorado beating nebraska in 01.... thats a good call.
