Teams like Ole Miss and South Carolina that barely miss the playoffs aren't going to give a crap about playing in the Music City or Reliaquest Bowls. I'd go a step further and say the next level down like LSU and Mizzou won't care either.

10 of the 12 teams in the playoff are going to be able to make the semifinal. I don't think Indiana or Boise State will be able to. The top four getting a bye are going to miss out on the best thing about a bigger playoff - home first round games.

I predict that within five years, we expand to 16 and two more bowls get added to the rotation - could be traditional bowls or could be two like Texas and Las Vegas with great stadiums.

The rest of the bowls will die out. 15,000 people watching two teams that don't care isn't going to matter to the new age NIL athlete. Give me South Carolina in Eugene and Ole Miss in Austin and an extra round of chaos.

I've always felt like 16 was the right number to give every team in the country a legitimate chance. All but two Power 4 teams have spent time in the top 16 in the past decade, including every SEC team.

So the backups/next years starters will get some practice and game experience. That's still helpful.

Bowl games will never die as long as there are teams willing to participate in them and people willing to watch them on TV. They haven't been about fans actually in attendance for many years. They exist to sell ads.

Nope.

The real value to the bowl games is that teams get a bunch of extra practices as well as game experience and extra exposure.

That's why you see schools effectively paying to go to bowl games sometimes.

You are just looking at it from a fan perspective and what you find interesting.

The real value is money. You get a share of all the revenue.

Yes, the extra practices are definitely beneficial. That by itself makes it worthwhile for the teams to play them even if it's not the playoffs

If this were the case it would have happened over the past 10 years with the 4 team playoff format.

As long as they can keep finding sponsors and advertisers the lower tier bowls will continue.

After expenses it cost most teams more to play than the bowl sponsors pay them.

I have long held the view that teams invited to a bowl game should negotiate a better deal.

At a minimum the bowl sponsor should cover team expenses, travel fare, food and lodging for the team and coaches in addition to any bowl payout but apparently I am in the minority thinking teams are getting screwed revenue-wise when it comes to bowl games.

We need to just go ahead and split the FBS into two divisions. P4 and G5

Create FCS style playoffs for each division. To do this the SEC/Big 10/ACC/Big 12 would need to split their conferences into two geographically. Now we have 8 "conferences" with 2-3 automatic bids in each to get your 24 team bracket

If you really wanted to make things interesting, you could even relegate the bottom 5 teams down and move the top 5 teams in G5 up like soccer

Since the players have all the power now, they could just vote as a team to opt out and there isn't anything the college could do because they are under no obligation to participate. Which will lead to contracts.....Basically universities running a minor league football league which is BS.

It’s always about the money. When it goes, the bowls will go with it.

LSU and Mizzou won't care either.

Mizzou will care. They buy into a brotherhood and want 10 wins.

The only player who might opt out is Luther Burden. The rest will play.

The bowls are already dead, they died in 2014 when they introduced the playoffs. But the bowls won't get eliminated in the future for the same reasons they still exist this year, they're just going to exist as something for people to watch because people like football with the Holidays.
