A&M isn't most schools. I get that the unabashed pride and quirky nature of some of our traditions are the basis for the hate, but it's interesting how much play it gets.
Is it curiosity? Envy? What? We're different and proud. What's the issue?

I've never had a problem with A&M fans, unlike their counterparts from Austin...

The fact that no one else orders rings is why it works so well for us. If you see someone with a big gold class ring they are probably an Aggie. That helps us stick together in ways other alums can't- I wear that ring on every job interview knowing that it gives me an undeserved boost in the state.
Another example of this is the name itself. Many many years ago all the big A&M schools changed to ________ State. We turned down Texas State, and now we are the biggest A&M and the first one any person thinks of when you say A&M.
Just like Oregon with their uniforms, being different and standing out is how you separate from the crowd.

Don't flatter yourself. No one in the SEC hates A&M. Y'all are just an easy target.

See there again, you construed my post as arrogance when I'm simply asking a question.
There's a difference between prodding an "easy target" and consistently admonishing them. For example, your posts about our rings or how we perceive Texas aren't funny, sarcastic jabs. You're being serious. It's quite clear. Or the posts from others regardjng the legitimacy of the corps. Its not classic flaming. Its virtiol.
And back to you specifically, you're always on these types of threads despite being a UK fan. You shouldn't really give a shite, but you do.
It's as if you and plenty others take it upon yourselves to explain to A&M--the hopelessly naive child-- that it shouldn't be proud. And when that doesn't work, your frustration spawns and becomes self-evident through all your passive-aggressive b.s.
I just dont really get the motive.

I don't get all this hate for the Aggie Ring. It's a tradition that started when we were an all male military college, much like the service academies, and has perpetuated as Texas A&M evolved into the University it is today.
Getting your Aggie Ring is something every Aggie strives for and is a constant reminder of both the history and tradition of Texas A&M, as well as your hard work while there. It serves to identify you to Aggies anywhere and everywhere in the world as a part of the Aggie Family. I have met a number of Aggies solely because we were wearing those rings.
For an Aggie, there is no greater day as a student then when you get your Aggie Ring. Students look forward to it and celebrate it more than the day they graduate. However, I suppose this is just one of the aspects of the "Aggie Spirit" referred to by the following saying:
"From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. And from the inside looking out, you can't explain it."

So before someone responds to StricklandAggie's post, tell me why it bothers you.
Because it definitely does.

I mean. He might not like A&M, but it is most likely him being naive. It's just a message board, regardless of how serious he is or isn't, I don't think he really cares. I think you're misplacing frustrations from the uneducated Texans that do single out A&M above all others. I don't think a random UK fan really gives two shits one way or the other.

Maybe not him specifically then.
But his posts are just reminiscent of the type of shite we always hear. It's just so stale and played over.
Just curious about the angle. What's the point?

Never liked that saying. It makes us sound arrogant. All though Texas A&M is the greatest University on the planet, we deserve to have pride in it, but that saying always comes off as douchey to me.

Meh. Get tougher skin. You're gonna need it when the cajuns start to invade.

As an aside, Virginia Tech also has a strong class ring tradition, although their design changes every year. If you think the Aggie ring is unsightly you should see my cousin's. It is easily twice the size of mine and looks like a cross between a national championship ring and a brass knuckle. It's absolutely massive.

I think that's a mischaracterization. Most people either (a) don't know the Aggie Ring exists, and/or (b) couldn't care less. Don't make the mistake of allowing a sample of random message board posters speak for the population.

I was referring specifically to the hate shown in this thread, not that "everyone" hates it.

I think that is your problem right there. The ring, must like the Academy rings, probably WAS something earned and to be proud of. I have no doubt in that. However, today, you need only complete 90 hours, 45 of those at TAMU to get one. You don't need to be in the corps, you don't need to serve in the military...you need to be only a college student that is on their way to getting a degree in something. That really makes it not special. It started out as something special, but today, not really. You can be proud of it if you want, but really, meh. At one time you could probably compare it to a service academy ring, not today. Pretty much anyone with enough money to get into your school can get one. That doesn't make it special at all.
I went to a mostly all-male military school so I do get some of the traditions and such and how they look odd to the outsider. Granted, TAMU takes some of them to 11 on the odd scale. TAMU is the Japan of military environments. Hey, this is cool, lets take it to ereven.
For most of us, we aren't jealous. We really are just making fun of you because in reality, most of the people running around doing that silly stuff are just college students. Nothing more. Nothing noble like joining the military to serve their country. They are simply college students and don't act like they are anything more. They aren't.
Don't take this that I hate you guys. In general, you folks are fine people and fun to hang out with. My first roomie when I got out of the military was an Aggie. Good guy. It is just annoying when you act like people make fun of you cause we 'Just don't get it'. We get it, but it is still stupid, much like many other traditions at other schools are.
