Truth. If this were the case then College Station should be higher on the list as it is less than 2 hours away from Austin, which IS the Live Music Capitol of the World. Go downtown on a weekday night, and you'll find a live band playing at every other bar/club. We have big acts playing big shows at the Drum every other week it seems. ACL and SXSW are two highly revered music festivals in the country (ACL has lost some credit though in recent years), with bands who will come anyway, even if they don't get a slot. I've heard SXSW rejects playing on the Lamar pedestrian bridge or in the bathroom of a restaurant/bar. Musicians see Austin as a place to be seen, but not necessarily signed. That's the misconception. So before anyone dismisses Austin as a music scene, you best define what you mean first.
Here is the honest story, told to me by JFF's roommate at the time: It was actually the roommate who had yelled racial slurs and picked a fight with the 47-year-old black man while he was hammered. It was Johnny who tried to break up the fight but ended up having to defend his drunk roommate. That's when police showed up. This has been just a giant game of telephone.
