Not true - the entire USC team is sitting out this year!!!

Lol, USC hasn't been relevant in 15 years. As a matter of fact, the best team you fielded during that time frame was with our coach as your interim HC. Your program is trash, and would be lucky to even reach a bowl game, much less a so called "mid tier bowl" like the Fiesta Bowl. Delusion suits you my friend. Hopefully y'all have a shot at the New Orleans Bowl or something similar next season but I don't see y'all winning six games tbh.

quote:There weren't really "lesser" bowls 50 years ago. If my count is right, there are 39 bowl games this year. In 1990, there were 19. Of the 39 bowl games being played this year, only 8 were around 50 years ago.
Time you realize college football is now a business and 50 years ago it was played mostly for pride, so going to a lesser bowl still meant something - win and get ranked higher.
quote:I think there are a lot of reasons for the viewership to drop. One is oversaturation - 39 games (40 if you count the CFPCG).
Non-playoff bowl game viewership is way down. This will continue.
Another is scheduling. With ESPN owning the rights to 99% of the games, and not wanting many of them to compete with one another, you end up with games on at odd times of the day. Joe 6-pack may have to work Wednesday - Friday of this week and not be able to see games that start at 1:30 each day.

You clearly struggle with reading.
You did not win and get ranked higher if you were playing in the Independence Bowl or the Rose Bowl because THE LAST POLL CAME OUT BEFORE THE BOWL GAMES.

We are getting an 8-team playoff. It's just a matter of when.

Danny White and UCFast forced the playoff expansion.
UCF may help force a playoff because their opponents top players don’t care even plan UCF in a bowl game.
The OP has a point. Players like Grier sitting out bowl games will hurt people’s interest in the game .

And this is why he can't count past 14.

There is no talk of playoff expansion outside of a couple of shitty articles that have been written. I think the current contract runs through 2025 so that's the earliest you might would see a change but I doubt you see more than 4 ever. Hell you barely had 3 maybe 4 teams that deserverd to be in this year. Attendance all over college football is already down so it's hard to believe fans would travel to another tier of games.

Thoughts?
No, they won't.
Even if 50 players sit, that's an average of less than one player per bowl team. It's much ado about nothing.

He can't even force the Gators to play one game.

I completely agree with this premise.
This is how we get an 8 team playoff.
If UCF beats LSU, we might have 8 team playoff in the next 2 years.

$250,000 is a lot of cheese.
Never would work. So Will Grier plays, but audibles into a running play every play. Then what?

It will be changed long before 2025. Bank it.

I don’t think players sitting out will significantly contribute to expanding the playoff. CFB fans support the teams not the players

Just shows how most bowl games don't actually mean anything.

Nope it won't. All the powers that be said the bcs would run it's contract and no one beleived them but it did. Same thing here. They may tweek it some after 2025, maybe go to six but I doubt it. It won't be going to eight though. You will have to find some other way to make besides letting undeserving teams in.

Bowl games, outside of the top tier, are typically undersold - its almost tradition. Corporate sponsors will till eat a lot of tickets to the better bowls. As long as they are played during the holidays when there isn't much else on people will stil ge them on tv even though most aren't even paying attention. They will expand for more money at some point. But it won't be because some student athletes sitting out the bowl game has hurt there bottom line in meaningful capacity.
