How much of an impact is the new player safety rules having on defensive performances?

No longer can a dback knock the shift out of the WR to dislodge the ball and it seems like they're playing a lot softer. Without the fear of getting hit the wr's can make more plays.

It's an offense based rule book now and it shows on the field.

Thoughts?

That call on HaHa was terrible. Why did they still get the 15 yards even though the penalty was waved off?

You can annihilate anyone as long as your hands are outstretched with palma up.

Pretty sure that guy doesn't exist anymore, but, honestly, I haven't checked.

That's a viable option man. If losing some teeth is the consequence of poor tackling, tackling will get better. You'll also see a lot more tackles involving the shoulder and wrap-up rather than going for the knockout and leading with the crown.

I actually didn't know the full rule until they showed it during the replay of the Clinton-Dix hit. Apparently you can't lead with the shoulder either.

Rule 9-1-3 — No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet.

Rule 9-1-4 – No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder.

So even if you don't lower your head and are not breaking rule 9-1-3, if you hit above the shoulders with anything it can still be targeting.

So basically you can't try to tackle the receiver until after you let him make the catch.

No, you just can't tackle him high while he is defenseless. You can blow him up with anything except the crown of your helmet, as long as you hit him at chest level or lower.
