I live in Branson and have been to Pigeon Forge. Companies own business in both locations. Some are run out of Branson and some are run out of Pigeon Forge.

Smokey Mountains are fantastic.

Branson has Table Rock Lake and what Johnny Morris is doing with his golf courses and Big Cedar Lodge is amazing. We ate lunch at Mountain Top yesterday and I've never seen his courses and the restaurant that busy. The view from Mountain Top and Top of the Rock are something else.

Mountain Top Course, Ozark National, Buffalo Ridge and Payne's Valley looked full. Golfers flying & driving in from everywhere to play a couple rounds on multiple courses.

Senior PGA event will probably continue here and, who knows, maybe Johnny and Tiger built Payne's Valley so that it could host PGA events.

So for someone that's going to Gatlinburg next month and wants to minimize his time in tourist traps, what should I visit?

Both places suck equally though. The Cracker Barrel of vacation destinations.

Gatlinburg kinda sucks too.
Plus half of it burnt down a few years ago.

A different city?

The whole town is a giant tourist trap by design. It's a marginally classier one than Pigeon Forge, but still...

Hike up to Mt. Leconte Lodge via the alum cave trail. Something like 7 miles. Best hike in the Smokies. Getting caught in a snow storm while hiking that trail is one of my favorite moments of my life.

Exactly. It’s like the last vacation spots before you’re admitted to the nursing home.

Had that happen to me as well and it’s a wonderful hike. Man it was COLD when we made it to the cabins. This was probably in 1981-82 I was a just kid but it left a lasting impression.

We didn’t get caught so much as we just went ahead despite the snow, but Leconte under 6 inches of snow is a sight to behold.

Would not do it again in the snow however

My wife’s from here. We’ve been married 26 years and I use to say that I’d never live here. Been here the last 11 years and have enjoyed it.

I see why people dismiss Branson cause I use to do the same thing. Yes, lots of retirees and most are from up north. Never been to a tourist trap but have seen a couple shows and enjoyed them.

We get all the seasons and our winters aren’t bad.

Table Rock is an excellent lake. Taney Como is behind my neighborhood and holds record trout.

Again, what Johnny Morris is doing with his courses is something to behold.

If you come and spend all your time on Hwy 76 then that’s on you cause you’ve missed all the best parts of this area.

The weather is definitely better than Mississippi where I'm originally from.

I don't really even go to Branson except at Christmas but I like it. I think the show industry is really going to struggle if they don't adapt though. A few corny jokes and an impersonator dont get it done anymore.

Side note, I didnt realize it was happening but just saw where a TopGolf is being built in Springfield.

Its the same way on any of the music or other boards, anything that is mainstream or popular is "trashy" or "sucks."

Maybe they vacation in Vail every year.

Shows need to adapt. I have a friend who owns and performs in his theater. They produce new shows each season and every Christmas. I’ve been to his shows twice and always enjoy it. He sings and jokes but doesn’t have canned material. He just interacts with his crowd and plays off them.

I’ve seen performances at Sight & Sound. Their actors are very good and the do a great job with visual graphics and incorporating trained live animals in their theatric performances.

Best thing I’ve seen in Branson was the Cleverly’s. They’re in Nashville now. They are excellent musicians and do a great job on all the bluegrass “classics” like Low, No Diggity, and Say My Name.

I think it’s actually the knockoff version of Top Golf and not actual Top Golf. Assuming you’re talking about the one off Glenstone and Kearney.
