In some ways, I get it. I can imagine an athlete being most comfortable in a given brand’s gear over another. Like, I could see an athlete that only likes wearing underarmor choosing a school with a merch deal with underarmor over one that’s affiliated with addidas. Someone who only likes nike shoes would choose a nike school over a russel athletic school.

What’s crazy is that the athlete that is making the most money on this nil deal, in the whole country, is a gymnast from lsu . Her deal will bring 7 figures
Wait till you see what Suni Lee, gold medal winner gets.

And what happens when Nike tries to outbid Adidas? These kids will also be in bidding wars before they are out of options.
Do you think LeBron signed that lifetime contract with Nike for what some say is north of a billion dollars because he couldn't live without the shoe?

how long until kids start picking schools based on nothing more than the apparel sponsors
I had a friend in highschool who was a 4 star safety. There were rumors he was committing to Nebraska and I asked him and he said "hell no I'm not playing for an Adidas school"
His high school was nationally ranked and sponsored by Adidas

He ultimately ended up at a Nike school.
ETA: this was pre NIL
Sometimes guys just hate the brands that much where they want to play for a Nike or an under armour school.

Lebron, being a shameless whore, I could not see that. However, I absolutely could see a lot of athletes deciding which company to allow themselves to be affiliated with based on which one they actually prefer to wear.

That's a good point. If/when Oregon starts throwing around Nike money, I'd have a hard time believing Nike schools would be ok with it.
The way i understand Nike doesnt make money off of other schools wearing their apparel. They pay schools to wear it. So aside from fans buying jerseys and tee shirts at sporting good stores, i dont know how bad it would necessarily hurt them. Its always been easier to recruit against schools that have Adidas or Under Armor. I feel like Oregon might be a recruiting powerhouse going forward.

I could see a lifelong LSU recruit saying no to the tigers because he loves someone else's shoes.

I can imagine one SEC school would have a definite advantage:

Have wondered the same thing. I also would bet that you're going to see a massive increase in recruiting for places like UCLA and USC for no other reason than NIL money.
That may be short term.
The development and coaching has to follow or you're going to see those rich teenagers fail to make pro rosters.

Oregon, Ohio State, and a few others are going to get rich on Texas recruiting if we don't get the NIL straightened out.

Yes. Sooners are so dumb.

It is unreal how Oregon is recruiting. Decades ago they were nothing and now they are getting the best players out of California. That reach as spread as far as Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas where it is struggle keeping them here.

I don't see USC getting a big jump from it. They and UCLA don't have any momentum going for them. Oregon has taken over California and getting the best players.

You are correct, but if he gets paid by Nike and chooses a Jordan brand school and then says oh, I thought whole umbrella, but now can’t wear anything with the swoosh. Do you think the companies are going to continue paying him?
What Tigerpride18 is saying, and I also believe to be correct, is that recruits cannot get NIL deals.
Players already enrolled in school get NIL deals.
Thus, the scenario you mention would technically be impossible (although we would probably be naive to say it won't happen).

I knew that happened, I mostly meant, adidas saying we will sign you but you have to choose an adidas school. Any adidas school.

Depends on the state, I think some states allow high school kids to do NIL and that was the problem with Texas and Ewers.
