I did a deep dive on OU the other day, for content purposes.
Honestly, OU will be moreso scrappy this season but next season is probably where you see potential and gelling turn into product on the field.

One thing youll learn soon about OU is theyll mess up Texas, Bama and Georgias and seasons but if they see any non conference teams in playoffs the pressure of being outside the cotton field of Oklahoma will paralyze them

Steele is not going to hype a team that did so-so last year unless he sees a definite reason to do so. Steele is in for the long haul he wantsa good record on his rankings.

Do i think OU is better this season?,,,definitely .. OU will have an offense this year..

Once the SEC spotlight is on Mateer in his first year at big program like OU he will be like deer in head lights while playing Georgia, Bama, Texas and LSU
Defenses
Itll take him two full years starting to get good with a defensive coach like he has against real competition
Remeber, this aint the big 12

They will be a much improved team this year. 9 wins is not aiming too high on their potential.

Steele rates OU as #1DL and #1 LB in the SEC and the secondary is rated #7…

You think OU defense in practice is gonna be anything close to Texas, Bama, Georgia and LSU defense?

Boy you must be smoking Peyote out there with them Indians on the reservation in Oklahoma or something

Those defenses are going to hit him so fricking hard hes gonna see next week.

We’ll see his true skill if his heart gets through it first.

OU is widely believed to have the best defensive front in the country. They have an experienced linebacker unit and have a deep safety room.

In addition, venables is Kirby’s equal as a defensive mind. The best of this generation.

So, yes, I think OU’s defense can stack up against Alabamas and georgias…not to mention their defense is superior to Texas’s going into this year.

If Mateer throws 10 less touchdowns this year than last year that still way better than what OU got at QB last year. Also OU has 40 blue chippers, Washington State had zero last year.

I listen to a ton of college podcasts, and it looks like the team de jour this offseason is OU. Pate, Staples, and Feldman have them in their playoffs and top 10, and now Phil Steele has them ranked 8th and a playoff team.

He has them top 5 in the SEC in 6 position groups. Only one not in the top 5 is DBs at 7.

QB- 4
RB- 1
WR- 5
OL- 5
DL- 1
LB- 1

Are you buying all the hype? All the experts think Mateer will dominate the SEC. I do think they go to Red River 5-0 because they will be favorites at home against Michigan (true FR QB), and Auburn. The Texas game will be a coin flip, and the more experienced QB wins that game 9 out of 10 times.

Most people say they will get in at 9-3. What say you?

They will be improved, but that schedule is rough.

I did read that Mateer played the 105th toughest schedule at Wazzou last year. They played 1 P4 team.

He’s also a run first guy. I’ll be curious to see that week after week against some tough defenses

OU will definitely improve but their schedule is extremely tough. I don't see them doing any better than 8-4.

I love all the summer speculating... it is baked in to the college football calendar.

All I can say being an OU fan is that this team is a complete wild card...

Nothing would surprise me good or bad. You can make a case for either.

For example..

We have heard both of these takes on this thread..

"Arbuckle, Ott and Mateer are going to come out of the west and tear it up in the SEC because they are so good..."

versus..

"Arbuckle, Ott and Mateer are not going to be able to step up to the competition of the SEC from playing in the ACCMountainPacWest."

Who knows?

What’s crazy is their over under in Vegas is 6.5 which is crazy

Everyone has them as a playoff contender so that’s the easiest money ever. I see worst case 7-5

You mentioned us playing Georgia at least 5 times. We don’t play them your whorns do.

Us having away game in RRS is helpful

3 true road games
1 neutral rival game we are away team
4 true home games

Last year as home team in RRS meant 4 true road games plus the neutral game and only 3 true home games.

Although tx has a creampuff schedule again they have 4 true road games plus neutral game. Road games in SEC are no joke no matter the team. I think they will have some pain this year with new QB

9-3 would be a great year for OU. Beat Michigan and tx would be a playoff type year. Bama is likely a loss, especially after last year and its at Bama. At Tenn is a tough game too. LSU is last game and at home - so its a matter of health at that point.

Texas first half of the season is as tough as anyone

At Ohio St
At Florida
OU neutral
At UGA

Their over under is only 9 games so even Vegas thinks they lose 3.

Michigan will go 6-6 and I think OU blows them out. Their coach might be suspended and they have a QB that just turned 18

LOL. They were gifted the easy teams overall. Why didn’t you list their whole schedule.

OU plays this schedule and there is not one SEC easy game.
