Have alters always been around or is it a more recent phenomenon?
Possum, RIP, introduced me to this place and I wish I had been introduced much earlier.
I’ve predominantly posted on team specific boards like Volnation and 8thMaxim.
The last multi team board I posted on was Southern Sports Tonight.
That ended in an extended lawsuit and cash lost to Scott McKinney.

First of all, this is the only forum on Earf that uses the term ALTER. Everywhere else, where brains are used, what you are describing are called sock puppets.
Secondly, alters many times have to be used to circumvent poor, inadequate, and biased moderators whose only chance to ever have an orgasm and feel like a whole person is when they "ban" someone.
Erratic and uneven moderation leads many to use "alter"native identities to post. For example, someone may say that Georgia is horrible and be immediately banned. Someone else may say that Georgia sucks huge, diseased, crusted up nuts on a daily basis and the moderator will laugh and say that's funny and the poster won't be banned. It all depends on if the moderator needs that feeling of power that day or not.
Me, personally, I've never used an alter.

Im pretty sure no one really cares about the question.
That said- ive had 1 username since 2000 (maxboxing.com). Started posting on the espn message boards about a year later. Jumped on dawgrant.com around 2004/2005. Im not sure exactly when dawgrant became Georgia Sports Board but i started posting on it in 2012.

I'm not an alter but I get accussed of it constantly. Basically anyone that posts outside the expected stereotype fan is accused of being an alter.
If I dont suck off Bama and hate LSU, then I'm considered fake. Or if I attack Auburn, then I must be a Bama alter.
There are probably far fewer alter accounts than people think.

I’ve only used an alter once when I was banned for almost a year for criticizing Les Miles....looks like I was right on that one.

This is so true. The moderators historically were petty and vindictive. They seem to be better now.
If you breathed on Les Miles wrong you got banned but people criticized Coach O savagely with no repercussions...until he won a championship.

Yeah, it's all very arbitrary. Let's say a mod's wife calls him a fat, nasty hog and then an Arky fan comes on the board talking about hogs, like they always do, that's almost an automatic ban.
Or, let's say back in 2007 you are just fricking around with some idiot LSU fans in a thread they started about "Will Saban Ever Come Back" or some stupid title like that. You say something to the effect of you know for a fact that Saban is already tired of Alabama fans and Terry Saban is begging him to come back to BR and you are tracking plane routes and Saban is back in BR asking for his job back.
Well, that would definitely lead to a 12 year ban.
