WDE and RIP Charles.
He coined the phrase "we gave them a country boy arse whoopin'," Paul. Referring to the gumps of course.

He called heavily during the Tuberville and Gus years.

Charles and Tammy dead. Phyllis is gone too.
The callers that made his show great have all died.

RIP Charles. It was good times before finebaum sold out to espn and the internet took over the world.

Larry just died two weeks ago. He was a regular.

All those familiar colorful characters — beefin' with each other, some playing a bit, some taking it wayyy too seriously — you never could tell what was real and what was purely for entertainment.
But during that brief period of time, it was entertaining as hell.
Kind of reminds you of a certain website. Maybe we need a revival.

As if he had dignity to sell.
From someone old enough to remember his B'ham newspaper days and ways.

Uhhh. No. Never has it been “great”. It’s always been mental midget wrestling on the radio.

How many of his fake paid callers have passed?

You don’t know what you’re talking about. The Jox days along with his AM days were quality radio. Dipshits who only know the SEC Network version always chime in but they didn’t hear the show before it went national.

I doubt he cares to defend Finebaum's show. I bet he meant a millionaire over great.

I actually do. I was introduced to it on JOX by online streaming from one of my college roommates that was from Birmingham. He listened all the time.
This was well prior to SEC Network and smack in the middle of the hellacious Croom years at MSU.

This. RIP Charles and Larry.
ETA: sounds like he's moving back to Bham. Sounded like there is something up at ESPN and something will be released in next few weeks

In that case your opinion is shite.
BOB, Charles, Shane, Bobby, Phyllis. The Jox days also didn’t feature Neal Vickers. To me the Vickers days were peak Finebaum. Vickers didn’t know sports but he gave Finebaum someone to play off of and it worked well.

Hell yeah, Neal Vickers enthusiasts unite!

Paul Finebaum, Pat Smith, David Sibley, and Neal Vickers
quote:
Finebaum started his radio appearances in the mid-1980s by giving morning commentary on the Mark and Brian Radio Show on WAPI-FM (I-95). After starting his own afternoon radio show a few years later, his program became the highest-rated sports talk show in Birmingham.
In 2001, Finebaum launched The Paul Finebaum Radio Network, syndicated with affiliates across the southeast. It was named in 2004 by Sports Illustrated as one of the top 12 sports radio shows in the United States.
People also don't really consider that this was mainly pre-internet, when there were no such things as online forums (except maybe BBS).
If you wanted to dunk on somebody or troll a whole fanbase, you had to call up and do it live on air.
