This, permanent opponents need to be kept because most are good rivalries.
Also, going to 9 conference games means schedules even out more, you won't have some teams play 4 Top 25 SEC teams and others play 2, for instance.

I'd be okay with a 6-1-1 if the rotating opponent was defined properly. The same can be said for half the schools that don't have "rivals" as their permanent team, rather a cellar dwelling team.

Things have a way of working out; for all the LSU fans hollering about the unfairness of it all just need to shut up and let the team play. I hollered for years about the unfairness of USCe getting away with cheating. Nothing was ever done and then: BOOM. A&M hollered about Texas while Texas laughed and laughed. Fans laughed when we told them Kiffin was a POS; ditto Petrino and Arky. LSU fans just need to STFU and let things play out.

We just played UF 4 years in a row and beat the shite out of them in 3 of those games.

Wouldn't bother me any. In the last 8 games against Florida, Alabama is 6-2.

For the same reason Alabama doesn't want to play Florida or Georgia. LSU wants to maximize its chance to win SEC/BCS championships. You do that by playing Tennessee, not Florida.
