Well, we’ve got three swings at this to feel comfortable that we got it right. One positive is that Carter only needed one in his football search.

Do we at least get a Manning out of this?

If only he could copy everything else that Skip did.

Skip was smart to retire when he did.

Another 10 years and LSU fans would have been howling to fire him too. It's what we do.

I think generally a lot of Ole miss fans complain about things he does that might actually not have much merit. The not going to Omaha thing is frustrating but I've never really seen anyone say specifically what they think Bianco is doing or not doing to cause that. The complaint is normally that he is causing them to "play tight" which kind of sounds made up. Maybe it's true, who knows.

Generally people complain about things like he leaves pitchers in one batter too long. There are times when he does and in hindsight it doesn't work, but there are also times he has done this and it worked to help save the bullpen and people weren't noticing that part. Some people complain that he bunts too much. We went through a phase when we tried to use more small ball like 10-15 years ago, but it is not so anymore. We are normally around bottom of the league in bunt attempts. We aren't normally that good at it when we try it, probably because we never bunt.

People complain that he plays the lefty/righty matchups too much. However those people probably don't have access to the advanced stats for those batters. Generally a left handed batter that a better chance of getting on base against a right handed batter and vice versa. I notice many other teams do this. Most of our fans weren't into college baseball before Bianco, so they are just looking as basic stats and don't understand that a left handed batter has a better viewing angle on the ball from a right handed pitcher.

He does like to do things himself. For example you never see an assistant coach walk out to the mound, and he always calls the pitches. We do a lot of waste pitching on 0-2 with a fastball 1-2 feet off the plate. I assume it used to throw the batter off for an upcoming breaking ball or to make them think that. I don't really know if it helps - I've never seen those stats.

For what it's worth I think Bianco would get to Omaha from LSU and maybe win the whole thing. Wouldn't surprise me if he got to Omaha the first year. It seems a little silly to me that maybe the best program in baseball wants our coach and we wouldn't want to keep him. Those two things don't really correlate to me. That being said if I had to guess, I say he chooses to stay. I could be wrong, but you don't generally see coaches stay at a program 21 years, then go for another school. But who knows.

Interesting the Ole Miss fans are saying exactly what I thought about Bianco. Sounds like he just needs to hire a pitching coach and let that part of the game go. If he came to LSU, bringing a top flight pitching coach with him, would have to be required if I am Woodward.

Going to have a great pitching staff and all American catchers. Will have a great SS and a couple of bombers. Struggles to get quality OFs. Usually loads up on SS and moves them around. Hitting us usually his teams weakness. Needs a good hitting coach to be successful.

How have we gotten to page 2 without anybody mentioning the horrible baserunning, outfield defense, and overall lack of baseball fundamentals?

Baserunning - just constantly low IQ baserunning. Making 1st out at 3rd, letting catcher pick you off 1st with bases loaded, etc. Watch Ole Miss and you will constantly learn of a new way to make an out on the base paths

Outfield defense - Bianco recruits hitters. Primarily middle middle infield and 1Bs that can hit. Then once they get on campus he tries to find a place for them. We are consistently below average in the outfield. And I don’t understand this, but our outfielders typically have average to below average arms.

Lack of Fundamentals - these are kids that have played baseball their whole life and I’m sure know what to do. But you’ll watch them play for Ole Miss and it’s like you are watching a junior high softball team. Example - earlier this year a team did the whole guy on 1st steals 2nd and guy on 3rd takes home. Worked twice so the team tried it a 3rd time. We threw the ball to the 2B and he literally walked the runner back to 1st instead of trying to get an out. Never seen that before.

Overall it’s just gorilla ball in the sense that we need to out talent our opponent. If we out talent you, then watch out. If talent levels are similar, we are at a disadvantage because we are not as smart as you are

Saw this on another board.

quote:

I know a former Ole Miss player who didn't think much of Bianco. Probably some sour grapes because he had a rocky college career (lost his scholarship and had to pay OOS tuition), but he did get a few cups of coffee in the majors. This guy was a pitcher and said he learned more from his high school and select ball coaches about pitching than the staff at Ole Miss. He the staff recruited saying the entire staff was a bunch of former catchers who could develop both pitchers and position players well but that not have a dedicated full-time pitching coach should have been a red flag.
