OLE MISS TURF

My rant for today is about the field at Ole Miss. If you are a member of the SEC, then you have enough money to grow and maintain decent field turf that will give a little under pressure and not break the players' ankles. First it was Kenyan Drake, then this past Saturday it was one of Ole Miss' own players L. Treadwell and the only reason they both were severely injured in my opinion was that stupid rug turf they have over there. No one uses that crap anymore just for this reason. I think the SEC needs to DEMAND they go to natural turf over there or get fined until they comply. I feel like these kids were both injured needlessly, and it needs to stop right now. I hope no one else is injured on that crap before this season is over, and I really hope they make them change it before next season. That's all I got today.

I have absolutely no evidence to support your claim but I support your claim. Honestly, it just looks better too.....unless you're Tennessee and don't know how to maintain grass.

Has there ever been research done to show that this field turf actually does have a higher occurrence of injuries? I played on the stuff in High School and didn't see a whole lot of injuries.

His injury was not caused by the turf. It was caused by a defender falling on his ankle.

I thought the injury was related more to the horse collar and the targeting finishing move. Maybe the sec should fine for that instead

How many ankles have been broken on grass this year?

How many times have you seen a guy pulled down from behind with they guy falling in his ankle this year?

Field turf is artificial and that is what they have. How can you grow an artificial surface?

Neither one of those injuries occured becuse of the turf. The other factors would have caused both of those injuries as well. Yes, older styles of turf cause more injuries (the newer ones are almost on par with grass) that is not the style on injuries that are caused by turf.

What about Mizzou, Vandy and UK (aren't yall switching next year)? How about every SEC program including Bama having turf practice fields?

By the definition of the rule, sure. They accomplish the same thing though. Whether you get pulled down by the inside of your shoulder pads or the back of your jersey, same thing happens.

While it was not technically a horsecollar, the angle of the pulldown and the effor of threadwell to score caused an injury similar to a horsecollar. However, I do not think it should have been a flag since he grabbed the jersey in mid back and not the region of the horsecollar. Just a horrible injury, though.

I went back to watch the play (wasn't sober on Saturday). You're right, that wasn't a horse collar. The targeting is awfully close though. He did lead with the shoulder, but the way he went in for the kill shot could've been interpreted as targeting

It seems to me they need to study this stuff before anyone else gets hurt on it. I am not a fan of it at all. I think natural grass is the only thing players need to play on, except in a domed stadium. I don't know what exactly they use in domed stadiums, but it ain't that crap.

All that matters is it was not a horsecollar by rule. I have seen plenty of players get pulled down from behind and not get injured. Pretty soon the game will have to become flag football because defensive players will have no way of tackling. It was an unfortunate injury, but you just have to accept football is a rough game and injuries are part of the game. You are never going to eliminate all injuries from football unless you do go to flag football

ArKansas has turf, too; both in Little Rock & Fayetteville.

Also Vandy and Mizzou do

They need to hire someone from the MSU turf management program. I am sure they could fix that right up!

Hold on there partner. I have never claimed it should have been a penalty of that injures in football are avoidable. Simply stating that the way he was tackled produced the same effect as if he had been the victim of a illegal horsecollar. I don't care if they change the rules. Not enough people get hurt like that anyway.
