November 12, 1983.
A 4-5 Ole Miss squad defeated a 6-2 Tennessee team 13-10. The game was televised on TBS. Tennessee finished 9-3 after winning the Citrus Bowl. Ole Miss finished 6-6 and lost the Independence Bowl to Air Force.
Sounds like a horrific loss. Glad I wasn't alive.

Why wasnt this game played in Oxford more often? seems like a clear advantage

Back in the day, Ole Miss played a lot of games in Jackson. The stadium there was much bigger. I think there were also agreements between the schools as to splitting profits from the gate receipts which made playing in a bigger stadium more desirable.

I hate divisions, and I hate expansion. Wish the league was still at 10 teams, and in this era, we could play a round-robin schedule with 10 teams. LSU and Kentucky used to play each other every year, and yet, this was LSU’s first visit to Lexington since 2007. Next year, we play Tennessee in Baton Rouge for the first time since 2010.

Both schools should just strike it from their record books

quote:Up until a certain point in time (was it the early 80s?), the SEC didn't make up the schedule--teams were just required to play a certain number of SEC games to be eligible for the championship, and made their own schedules. So, money was a factor. Back then, teams would split the gate 50/50 (even when played on campus). So, in order to entice a team like Tennessee to play them, Ole Miss had to agree to go play the game at a larger venue where UT would make more than they would going to Oxford. That's why Bama played their big games and Legion Field, and why Auburn had trouble getting anyone to actually come to Auburn.quote:Back in the day, Ole Miss played a lot of games in Jackson.
