Yes, and this year was our chance. We probably couldn't have done better than John L Smith. Truth is that BMFP f'd us out of that dream season. Now we must wait a longgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg time to have that potential again.

Making the decision to keep the staff, while good for the short term, may be the worst decision Long made.

What high profile coach you might hire next year is going to come in and agree to keep the current staff?

How can your current staff recruit effectively knowing this is probably a one and done?

Due to the timing of BP's ill-fated joyride, there really wasn't much else Long to do with the current staff or even with the HC hire. JMHO

This.

If anything, they added one more man to the mix that is fully aware of BMFP's system.

Interesting. So Long didn't actually search him out for this position. That means he straight up bailed on Weber State and not us luring him away.

Has this been discussed? What if he does well this season something like 9 wins? Do you still give him the boot and hire a head coach? No way an outside head coach is going to come in and want to keep this guy on his staff looking over his shoulders. Either way it's fricked up for Arky and John L Smith.

Either way, you're fricked. Bring in a new coach that changes everything and have a possible shitty year...or do it this way. Who's to say the kids would have taken to a new coach and performed to standard?

What do you really want Long to do? Look into the future? He can't. He has to make a tough decision and hope that those job openings don't happen. I guarantee you he has a list of people he knows would take the job in December.

I agree with this to a certain extent. Hiring an interim coach helps this year because the staff stays intact and the players are happy. I assume Jeff Long went after some big name type coaches but none of them were interested in retaining the entire staff for one year. If he couldn't get a top rated nationally known coach, then he would obviously be left with the unproven/upstart coaches on the next tier down. At that point you may as well wait and get them next year.

I'll repeat.. the ONLY way he's not gone after one year is if he gets 13 wins.

"Long announced the University of Arkansas will continue to evaluate the program and the head coaching position in anticipation of naming a head coach following the 2012 season. The current appointment will allow the program to identify a head coach for the future of the program in a timeframe that is more conducive to attracting the potential candidates expected for one of the nation's premier football head coaching positions.

We may very well hire a HC during the season like tOSU did and let him start recruiting and evaluating current staff. Seems like the most likely scenario.

He'll probably be gone anyway. The only way we succeed this year is all on Tyler Wilson, not anything magical that John L Smith brings to the table.

He agreed to it and signed a contract. He will make three times as much as he was making at Weber State. NOt really that fricked up.

Edit: oh and he contacted us according to sources. SO really not fricked up at all.

Do you think we'll still be the best job available come December? You think it's, I don't know, remotely possible that Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, etc, etc could ALSO be looking for a new coach (for a variety of reasons)?

So you're going to have to accept the fact that we're NOT going to be the best program, most likely, come December.

In all actuality, we'll be trying to convince a new coach to sign up to coach a team that just lost the majority of its "studs." No more Tyler Wilson. No more Knile Davis. No more Cobi Hamilton. No more Chris Gragg. Etc, etc, etc.

So one of those awesome pitches that we had now, "We've got a loaded cupboard at the moment. Come in and manage us well enough to get a good bowl game and start working on recruiting." Yeah. that? It's gone. It's going to be more of a, "yeah, yeah - sure. we graduated a bunch of guys. we had some guys turn pro early. But I SWEAR, those unproven kids are SUPER good too. Believe me."

It's a completely different situation to be stepping into. Step in in April of 2012, as a decent head coach, and you'll most likely win over the fan base because of how good we currently are in the grand scheme of college football. After 2012? Replacing a lot of players? That coach better have thick skin because his first year isn't going to be pretty.

Damn dude, you know how to put a negative spin on this shite. Depressing as hell when you think about it that way. Good luck Pig's, your future looks fricked.

I think that would be wise, unfortunately, there is no Urban Meyer type of slam dunk that is available.
It would have to be someone not coaching (at least not at the HC level) for them to leave during the season.
Either way, the sooner you have stability the better as far as recruiting goes.
