That is correct. Last season, he got the nod over Lamar Louis (who has since moved to OLB). Louis is an exceptional talent, but apparently Welter had a better grasp of the playbook, which was Chavis' primary determinant for the starting job.
Kendall Beckwith is now Welter's backup...Beckwith was very highly touted coming out of HS (listed as the #1 or #2 player in LA by all the recruiting sites). He played a bit of DE last year, but has made the switch to MLB this season. He played QB in high school as well, so I would think he could get a better feel for the defensive playbook than Louis could. Hopefully he begins to surface as the defensive leader in the next couple years.
