Off season thread. Question for Bama Baws about Tuscaloosa. Update.

Going to stop and stay in Tuscaloosa on July 6th on our way to Tennessee. What’s a good hotel to stay at that’s in a safe area next to some decent restaurants? My wife said there is a Loft in Tuscaloosa and we stayed at the one in Hattiesburg and it was ok. TIA.

There are are Hilton and Bonvoy properties at the corner of Skyland Blvd and Lurleen Wallace with a bunch of chain restaurants nearby and an Archibalds and Woodrows barbecue across from Academy . There is a Hampton Inn over by Rhoads Stadium that has a Baumhower’s nearby. There is an Indigo in downtown Tuscaloosa that has some bars/restaurants nearby.
Those would be where I would recommend you look to start.

I worked an event in March with a guy who stayed there at the Indigo. He is younger than me and stayed there because it is in walking distance of the downtown bar area. He had a good time and survived the weekend. I have also had people stay at several of the hotels at the corner of I-20/59-Lurleen Wallace-Skyland Blvd. One person had a bad experience at the Hilton Garden Inn, but that is because they were doing renovations and it was loud and they could smell chemicals/paint.

I’d drive a little further and stay off 459 in the Hoover / Riverchase Galleria area.

If walking distance to good restaurants is important to you, I'd recommend either the Home2 Suites or Embassy Suites on University Boulevard downtown. You're in walking distance to DePalma's, Mesa, Chuck's, Avenue Pub, Forte, etc.
It's a perfectly safe area.

Unless it is changed, Chuck’s and Depalma’s are two of the highest regarded restaurants in Tuscaloosa.

Thanks for all the recommendations. We stayed at the Embassy Suites. Unfortunately it was a Sunday so all the restaurants recommended were closed. We ended up eating at this little dive bar burger joint right behind the hotel. The smash burgers were really good. Went by campus and saw the stadium. I can’t imagine being in one of those frat houses back in the day right by the stadium on game day. Had to be a blast. We walked around the entire stadium and I do have two questions. Where the hell do people park on Gameday? We didn’t see any large parking lots close. Second question is I would love to know the history of that very old and very large cemetery right by the stadium. Was it there before the University was founded?
That drive through Mississippi and Alabama on 59N is very nice. Had only been as far N as Hattiesburg on that road before. Until this year we were mostly beach people so had only been in South Bama. Of all the towns we went through the one I looked at and said man I could see myself living here was Gadsden. Granted I know nothing about it but it was very visually nice nestled in the foothills. One of those not too big not too little towns.

Sat at the hotel bar for an hour. Just me and 2 other guys at it. Me the LSU guy, A Vol, and a UGA Dawg. It was kind of funny.
