I would like to see the SEC move to 9 conference games & TWO P5 OOC games required

the ONLY good thing about the 2020 schedule was the all SEC bit

THIS was the UGA schedule from 1965 - ZERO cupcake games with a 10 game schedule:

Alabama
Vandy
Michigan
Clemson
Florida State
Kentucky
North Carolina
Florida
Auburn
GA Tech

A lot of SEC schools played similar schedules back in the 60's and 70's. Here's Bama's schedule in 1978:

#10 Nebraska
at #11 Missouri
#7 USC
Vanderbilt
at Washington
Florida
at Tennessee
Virginia Tech
Mississippi State
#10 LSU
Auburn
#1 Penn State (Sugar Bowl)

4 of their first 5 games were against OOC major conference teams (2 Big 8 & 2 PAC-10). The worst team on their schedule was Virginia Tech (they weren't in a major conference at that time). With the bowl game, Bama played three blue bloods that season...

I would love to see 'em go back to schedules like that but don't see it happening...

I picked a Georgia schedule because I am a Georgia alumnus...

Wasn't that the team that beat yall like a drum in BHM and finally convinced Bear that he should recruit colored folk?

I would love for UGA and Clemson to come to some long term (like 10+ year) OOC deal.

Gonna need to go a few years further on back there, skippy. And Bryant already wanted to recruit black players years before but wasn't allowed by the powers that be. The general thinking is that he scheduled the Sam "Bam" Cunningham game with USC specifically for the purpose of demonstrating to those powers that without black players their beloved football program was going to fall irretrievably behind.

sounds great, until you realize that we would never see another compelling OOC game outside of bowl season - we'd be locked into games with Clemson & Tech & never see games with the likes of Penn State, Oregon or USC

based on that, no thanks

Agreed. We had it last year and then some and no one died.

No, the football team had been integrated for 7 or 8 years at that point. While USC also beat us that year (24-14), the season you're talking 'bout is 1970 when Sam Cunningham went through us like a knife through butter...

9 SEC games + GTU + Clemson still allows for another OOC game.

Meh... The only way I see that happening is if Tech stops playing Football. Not going to setup a second semi-permanent OOC P5 game IMO.

We're not going to a 12 game P5 schedule without some kind of overall CFP mandate... Especially not without Playoff expansion. The CFP has basically already shown that strength of schedule matters very little in the grand scheme of things unless you're a G5 school.

sure, but are we wanting to be that one team in the SEC with the hardest schedule?

cupcake games have a place; one for a quasi "off week" or scrimmage where back-ups get reps, and two for the budget windfalls for lower tier/division teams (I kind of like the law in SC that requires Clemson & SC to schedule in state cupcakes & Bama's historical refusal to play in state teams frustrates me as an AL resident)

Congrats on playing 4 teams with a winning record I guess

You're off by about a decade.

Which probably means you have a degree from Auburn, either in Math or History.

back then, MI, AL & GA Tech were considered powerhouses

FSU was probably considered our "cupcake game"

Vandy is an SEC team

how they did that year doesn't matter; the fact that big name schools were scheduled like that is the point

but I'm guessing you knew that

and I can't believe you took the time to look up the records

I picked that year because we had MI on the schedule and beat them (something I had been looking at based on this years playoffs)

we lost to MI in '57 and had TX & Navy the same year (Navy was good back then)

interesting side note - UGA has now played MI 3 times; twice in Ann Arbor & once in a bowl game - back then, UGA was not good or strong enough to demand a return trip to Athens
